coolant issue need help
I'm new to Supras, just bought a 1987 Toyota Supra Turbo. Got it pretty cheap, but it has some issues. the main one holding me up right now is this coolant issue. Here are some picture of where the coolant is leaking out of. I've been trying to figure out what it is or what it was supposed to be for the past few days.

It's supposed to be capped on LHD models, on RHD models the other side is capped.

So pretty much I just need to replace the cap and I'll be good?

Yup, just need to replace the cap. You can probably get one from Toyota, you may be able to find one at a parts store. Dorman / Motormite usually have some heater hose caps in a blister pack in the "Help!" section

Make sure it's not a vacuum cap and also if it's after-market try to find one that's fabric reinforced.

I just got one at the dealer the part number is 90339-16001. It's simply called a plug. The cost was $4.14 You may be able to stop the leak by tightening the clamp a bit. Looks like the oil has gotten to it and it may be deteriorated. One thing to hope for is that the pipe itself is not corroded and thin walled. I have seen some rotten ones. You need to get the oil leak under control or at least wrap the new plug with some aluminum foil.

I got 2 of them thru the shop i work at for $3.00 now its fixed and driving again. The oil leak is fixed. when i bought the car a month ago the valve covers were leaking bad. Thats the first thing i fixed tho. now its just time to sit down and start repairing everything thing else.

The valve covers have always been a source of problems for oil leaks. I have ended up using stainless steel Allen head screws with a drop of red Loctite on the threads to keep them from coming loose again. It makes it harder to get them out after the Loctite has set, that's why a Allen head screw works best. I also use a thin layer of black silicone to seal the valve cover gasket in the groove and on the contact side for added insurance.
Another place oil can leak are the spark plug valley plate 14 mm hex plugs if oil is collecting around your spark plugs after sealing the valve covers. A dab of silicone works here as well then torque them down. Keep an eye on your front and rear coolant by pass 90-degree elbows. When they get old or oil soaked they can become soft and rupture. I check by giving them a little squeeze when the engine is cold. It doesn't hurt to get a rag out and start cleaning up to your engine area. That way you can spot new trouble easier plus it looks good! |

Agreed, plus with the oil soaking it's had recently now is the best time as the 25+ years of gunk buildup is soft and easily got rid of at the moment. A few thousand miles of no leak & it'll be baked on again... Gotta love how modern the 7M engine still looks when its all clean & sparkly :D |
