In gear ~4000 rpms out of gear redline
Okay so im looking at buying myself a 1987 toyota supra mk3 with a m7gte stock other than recent rebuild, and little suspension parts. In neutural itll rev to redline like it should. In gear it only goes to about 4000/4500 rpms the bsvs is broke, ignition cap is gone. I see no other problems but it has something making it do this. Anyone have any ideas? I can attach pictures of what i am talking about to help which i will do from my phone because they are on there.

Left one is the black cover thats missing right one is what is broken. Not sure if thats the problem or not (this isnt the supra i was looking at) just using it for an example.

Check for diagnostic codes and post back (see the FAQ for instructions if needed). I'd guess the timing is off (mechanical or ignition), bad AFM or a bad knock sensor/knock sensor wiring.
EDIT: So the CPS innards are all exposed? Add, screwed up CPS to the list then (responsible for ignition timing). |
I cant constantly check it because its a decent drive away. Im just trying to see what im getting myself into before i buy it. I do have access to a scanner, and discount parts, so i can get it how it should but i want to know how much its going to cost. Considering its only 2200 he wants for it. Just gotta know these problem possibilities before i commit to it and dig myself into a money hole. Haha.
Those things seem not to bad. There is a check engine light and when i go there next time with cash im bringing a scanner to make sure its just the lower o2 sensor like the guy says. And that way i can show him that its a big deal or whatever to fix if it is. If no im definally okay with that price. It only does it in gear though. Clutch in it dont. Out of gear it dont. Only when its under a load. Untill the 4000ish rpms it runs and boosts great. |
You don't need a scanner, just a paper clip. Read the FAQ on it.
Problems in the engine and transmission are typically as pronounced as the load it's being run at. Not uncommon at all for a freely raced engine to not show all its cards. Racing an engine without a load is only good for checking a VERY short list of items. |
