Exclamation Smokey turbo

Having a problem with the Supra I bought this month, 1989 Turbo. Old family friend who sold it to me explained and demonstrated. When the car turns over and starts, after maybe five seconds there will be moderate white/blue mix of smoke from the stock exhaust. Not steam or wispy smoke like that of blown head gasket (hard to believe BHG due to the fact that it's apparently a JDM 7MGTE with <30,000 miles not to mention I know his credibility. He doesn't drive like Fast and Furious and the problem was not an issue until sometime last fall.)

Once the car starts running, as soon as the engine revs past idle the smoke from the tailpipe increases and much more smoke begins to come from under the hood, particularly the turbo.

Hoping I don't have a shot motor and it's something I can fix myself

Is the smoke continuous thereafter or only for a couple second after a COLD start? If it's only briefly present when the engine is just started and cold then valve stem seals are most likely. If it's constant then it could be bad rings, scored cylinder walls or damaged pistons. Do a compression test to start tracking down the problem. Blueish smoke = oil, white = steam (water and coolant), black = unburnt fuel. Of course there are other colors if more than one issue is present.

JDM engines are often worse than buying a local, high mileage engine at this age. They're discards from a society where cars (especially old ones) are completely disposable, seldom driven and the parts usually are pulled out of the cars to optimize storage space where they then sit under a tarp in a very humid storage yard for years. JDM really holds no value except for engines and parts which aren't already available in your area. At any rate, engines age even if they're never driven. The seals still dry up and condensation causes slow, consistent weathering of moving parts.

It's continuous, and that's good to know about the engine.

On that same note I was planning on swapping in a 2JZ if the entire motor was shot (which it seems it may be), do you know anywhere in the states or a reputable JDM dealer to get one from?

You say there's smoke from under the bonnet too, particularly from the turbo area? Have you pulled the turbo intake & bottom intercooler hoses off to check for oil there?

Provided your compression test comes out good I'd suggest perhaps it's failed oil seals on the turbo, this would be confirmed by oil pouring out of the intercooler when you pop the hose off & you can check the turbo bearings with the intake pipe off, there should be minimal play there (barely noticeable at all)

Question

I'm going to try and do that. Is there a diagram of how those hoses are set up from the intercooler?
