Where did these two hoses go?
 

Hello everyone!
Hey I tore our my rack and pinion, pressure line and power steering pump for rebuild. While plugging away at this I found a couple things that didn't make sense to me. One air hose connected to a stud bolt off the manifold from the intake ducting. On my power steering pump there is a place for two air hoses, one of them didn't have anything connected to it. The last one was off of the thermostat housing, I had an air line there that went to nothing off of the bottom nipple?

I think I can help sort this out, but I don't have any pics to show right now.

First, the vacuum line coming off your intake boot connects to that vacant port on the power steering pump. Make sure the other line on the power steering pump connects to a metal line a few inches from it (towards the timing cover), and that the metal line connects to the vacuum pipes under the intake manifold via another short rubber hose.

The part on your thermostat housing with 2 vacuum lines is called the "bi-metallic vacuum solenoid valve", or BVSV; these are almost always broken, so congrats on having one that's still intact! One of the nipples (doesn't matter which) should have a vacuum line going to the throttle body, before the throttle valve. The other nipple should have a line connected to the metal pipe on the air flow meter, and then another line from that pipe to the charcoal canister by the firewall. Connecting it to the air flow meter is not required, but it does help to keep the line away from the exhaust heat and tidies up the engine bay a little.

How much Dex does the power steering system take on an empty system?

I'm not sure how much dex to put in a dry power steering system, I can't imagine it's much more than a quart though. Be sure to turn the wheel from lock to lock as you're filling it up, that should help any trapped air escape and improve it's performance

Were your dust covers on the ends of the power steering rack still in good shape? I have one that is starting to crack and come apart. Can't find a listing for them at my local parts stores.
