Default 1990 NA Will not start !

Hey Guys,
I have a 1990 NA ( 200,000 miles ) that will not start. It was starting fine until yesterday, I came out of Auto Zone and it would not crank, all lights and gauges were normal. I thought the security was the problem, so I locked and unlocked the door a couple of times and it started. After work it started normal, got home and later on went to move it and same thing, no start. Checked battery, it was fine. Could this be security or starter problem? Can hear faint click when trying.

Thanx

Looks like it was a security problem, glad I didn't have to change starter !

Check the fuel pump relay in the black box behind the battery. They typically have the following behavior when going bad. Starts fine when cold. After driving to operating temperature and parking for about 20 minutes won't crank unless switching the key many times. I have replaced 2 of these and its a good idea to carry a spare. Other models of Toyota cars use this relay if you want a parts yard bargain.

Still having problem with car starter lock out. Tried to find someone to bypass TDS, nobody here has a clue. So I decided to take it to Toyota Dealer to look at fixing the TDS. Only Tech been there long enough to know anything about a 1990 model said he was 95% sure it was the starter and never heard of TDS shutting out the starter. They had the car all morning and kept trying to start it, started every time until I picked it up. They wanted me to leave it overnight so they could try and start it. They wanted to start by pulling the starter and replace contacts for around $350 and go from there. I'm going to install or have a push button starter installed, will this work or does the TDS cut off fuel & spark also? Any help would be great.

Did you check the fuel pump relay? Other than that you can run a direct connection to the starter solenoid terminal or use one of those push button remote starters for testing purposes to see if it cranks. Try cranking with the key in the ON position. Just be careful down there. I would disconnect the battery while you are wiring up your remote switch. I don't know if the security system locks out the starter but when I had problems with mine the alarm would sound when I put the key in the door switch and turned it. The switch inside the key lock needed fixing and I repaired it. There is a crescent moon shaped copper contact inside the switch that rides on top of the key lock and had come disconnected from the plastic post that held it in place. I put the clip on the post and Re-melted a mushroom on top of the clip carefully. There's not much to work with.

Have you tried inspecting the ignition switch and neutral start switch?

I forgot about the neutral lockout switch because mine is disabled. For a manual car you need to step on the clutch pedal while cranking. Automatics have one too. It needs to be in park and it could be out of adjustment. You can check for stored codes using the procedure outlined in a repair manual if you have one or use the online manual. Here is a link.

Hi , I see this is an old post , but are you still having cranking problems ? I had a Mk 3 Auto Turbo that would not crank , the problem was overcome by using the wire that energises the solenoid to energise a new relay instead , the relay was connected to the battery and the other side to the starter solenoid ( from where the original was connected ) . relay wiring instructions should be enclosed . After carrying out this mod , cranking problems were a thing of the past . Good luck .

I had a similar issue after doing an engine swap in my '86.5. Played with the security, attempting locking/unlocking of doors/hatch. No joy. Attempted to check/adjust the Neutral Safety Switch. No joy.
Finally just installed a push button start. I have found that it helps in cold weather to run the key/ignition all the way to the Start. Of course it won't start but apparently there are electronics (cold start maybe) that need to be activated. After turning to Start the key goes back to On and I hit the starter button. No issues.
Maybe some day I'll go back and troubleshoot the NSS or security system (I did remove the security module from under the dash).
