exhaust system

im going to try and upgrade my exhaust system but i need a little help. i am already going to buy some new headers, and a magnaflow cat. but what kind of downpipe do you guys recommend and what size inlet? i already have a nice exhaust, so im leaving that on there. but i was wondering if there were any other parts coming from the cat converter that i would have to change? or just any other parts in general? im no too familiar with the exhaust system. learning as i go.

to sum up. i wanna change that whole system, between headers and exhaust. but i wanna buy the parts seperate. i dont wanna buy the whole cat back systems they selll.

go to a muffler shop and get them to put on a catback exhaust

its so much cheaper

I don't know much about N/A Supra exhaust but I'm going to bet it's going to be safe to assume that from the header-back there's going to be 3 main components. 1) The Header, 2) The Catalytic, 3) The Piping (to include the muffler). As far as I can tell it seems your on the right track on upgrading the exhaust. I don't think there's a downpipe because that usually is refference to turboed vehicles. Good luck.

since you have an n/a supra there is no need for a downpipe...teh dowpipe just increases flow of the exhaust gas from teh turbo therefore increasing efficiency...it is just the header, cat, and the exhaust piping to the muffler

yea i kinda thought that i didnt need a downpipe with an NA. but i had to ask on here to make sure first. i know for sure i am getting the headers and cat. i have to check the piping coming from the cat to see the condition of it. i will most likely change it anyways.

thanks guys

Look, the hot ticket is go to an exhaust or muffler shop and have them custom build from headers back, one smooth MANDREL BENT 3 or 2.5" set up depending on your application and HP goals. If you want to go ahead and keep the cat... or don't. Just depends on how through your smog shop is, or who you know there. Just make sure to have them install at least one flex fit section just past the headers, the steel braided mess you see on down pipes, this way the exhaust since isn't hanging on your red hot headers slowly bending them till they crack. =) Good luck.

Dearest Mr/Ms (whatever) kewlcoconut, its all very simple. Just click the back button 2x, scroll up to Supra Faqs, and click on Exhaust Systems Researched, and read the opening post.

A 'good' muffler shop can do it all for you. Good meaning that they are recommended by people that like their work. I have seen alot of crappy work, and especially the welds, from places like Midas, and others.

You may even have to go 'look' at some cars they've done. Good luck!!
Let us know what you end up doing, and how much it cost.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but imho I think what I present is relevant. I want to upgrade my exhaust soon too. I wanted to get a custom 3" mandrel bent system with a universal muffler, because I don't want to pay the price of a prefabricated brandname exhaust. What do you fellas (and women) think about this muffler?

muffler shops also have mufflers like that and ther are probable cheaper...at least mine was

Bullz_EyE 11-02-2005 05:24 PM

T-304 Stainless Steel universal mufflers at a shop for less than $56.00? If so, your area has some pretty good deals.

I bought a dual tip muffler from Pep Boys and I love it. The muffler shop told me it was probably going to be cheap because they wanted me to buy their brand for more than twice the bucks, but scrrew them. You know, unless you are doing some serious racing, just getting a bigger system and better flowing mufflers and cat converters helps a lot. Mandrel bends are very nice but sweeping bends made at the muffler shop aren't really all that bad either.

You will feel a nice difference from the stock system, better sound and less restrictive, but most power will come from engine mods.
