hmmm try opening the hood, put your hands on the belts and look for a loose one ???
.then start it and use a 1 or 2" tube about 2-3 ft long cardboard or plastic, even a hose works, put one end up to your ear and point the other end at your engine, you can then directionally hear and locate where its coming from.. |

Ok, when you look at the engine from the front, you can see the fan. It is a big plastic thing with blades on it. There is a grooved belt that drives it and the alternator, which is that big silver looking thing on the upper right side of the engine. Below that is another silverlooking thing call the air conditioner pump. It has the same type belt that runs over a tensioner and to the crank pulley. On the left lower side front, is the power steering pump. It has the same type belt and gets its adjustment by loosening the bolt at the top of the pump and prying the top part of the pump away from the engine until the belt is correctly tightened. All three belts get there power from the center crank shaft pulley. It has three belts going around it.
You have to check the belts by looking at them and try to see if there are any cracks on the ribbed side. If so, replace it or all three. The alternator belt is usually the one that does the screeching because while just sitting there running that is the only belt that has resistance applied to it because of the alternator being used to charge the battery and any other electrical device you might have. If you have a mega music system that will cause a draw on the alt too. Anyway, revving it up and hearing the noise is from that. You have to loosen the bolt on the alternator and then use a 10 mm wrench to move the nut up on the adjuster bracket under the front of the alternator. Don't overdo it though, just tighten it until it stops screeching then tighten the nuts and bolts back up. Good luck and let us know. Russ |

Or like i said, how much play in the belt when you push in its middle. I even gave you the measurements in my other post. Tighten them all if they need it. Tightening one belt would be "fixing" your car. Tightening them all would be "maintaining" your car. If you plan on keeping that Supra better start maintaining. Also to answer your oil question i'll go off of the Engine oil selection chart located in my 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo/NA Owners manual. I run 20w-50 because temps never get very low here and with a turbo that already puts alot more wear on your oil and thus your engine i think the marginal 1 or 2 horses that you supposedly loose (i don't think you do once the engine is warm) is worth it. Plus im at 130K. Your somewhere effing freezing though... so you might wanna thin it up depending on how cold it gets there. The chart suggests 15w-40 from 40F down to 10F, or 10w-30 from 35F down to 0F and then 5w-30 from 50 down to below -20F. Really its just how hard the engine will be to crank over, cause once the engine is warm then the second number is what is important. Thats why i always run 20w-50. If someone wants a picture of the cahrt to post that would be cool because i don't have a website or on-line photo cache to URL load from. Hope this helps.
