First, before you spend an ass load of money on souping, make sure your are is mint stock. Fix any clicks, clunks, shimmys, shutters, etc. Things like a new fuel and oil filter will help you out. And of course any other maintenance issues should be addressed. Then....

Cheap and easy, K&N FIPK 8.9 horses at 5300rs, 3" turbo elbow available from Suprra_girl, 3" Down Pipe from Suprasport.com either the RT or Cooleeze i'd recommend. And then of course either no cat or a 3" high flow cat (if you plan to make it a street driver to stay in smog rules) and then finally 3" exhaust pipe and muffler out the back. That should net you quite a few horses quite simply and welllllllll under your 1200. You should have plenty left over for something more drastic when your ready like a full intercooler/hardpiping rebuild or uping the boost. And an AFR gauge...

All aftermarket downpipes I have seen eliminate the cat.

There is a current thread recommending how money should be initially spent when starting with a MkIII. liek you know liek I don't mean to be an a hole but liek you can read liek these threads liek you know.

start small first...dont immediately get a large turbo...it will add power but there will be a lot of restrictions that will set you back...your engine wont bring in air and get rid of exhaust as freely...from no upgrade to the intake or the exhaust, assuming the turbo wont come with a new downpipe...it will decrease teh flow of the turbo, your cooling system wont be efficient enough therefore you will be running hot most of the time...there will be a lot of problems if you dont address the small stuff first...a boost controller and an maf meter are fine...but i dont think you really need them just yet, i say start with some suspension work like coilovers, springs, bushings, control arms, and that kind of stuff or start with small steps in teh engine work, intake/exhaust to increase flow, downpipe, and you will need a fuel management upgrade for running a larger turbo...assuming you want to make a lot of power

I'm talking about the second cat. The first cat is not required by smog because the design is that the initial cat is to screen out the exhaust gases when its running cold after it is just started. You can remove it and leave the second cat or replace with a high flow and still be in smog ;b

Oh dang. MkIII's have 2 cats? I haven't had a chance to get under the car yet so I just assumed the one on the factory downpipe was all it had. I guess that's what I get for assuming. Is is right after the downpipe?
