The factory emissions control stuff was 'designed into' the engine/trans operation. So...taking off stuff is not going to give you any significant HP increase.
Even removing the EGR won't give you more ponies. I suppose you could gain some on a turbo model by removing the cat converter, because the exhaust would be more free flowing. But to actually gain HPs, you'll need to go the other route, and use add-on mods. So just removing, without adding, is almost pointless, young fellow. |

Surprising... I'd heard from an ASE tech buddy that the EGR system, on avg., takes away ~30 hp. Not true for the Supra?

A properly operating EGR system won't take HPs from these engines, as they were designed with the EGR. It is there for one purpose, to lower the combustion temperature. Without it, you will actually raise your ENGINE operating temps.
Many people think it dilutes your fuel mixture, but this is not true. The fuel mixture/ratio (normal ones, without after-market systems added) is controlled by the computer, which relies heavily on the 02 sensor input. What's that you say, you don't believe what this old tune-up & smog man is saying??? OK...so go drive your car from 0-60mph real fast, then stop and open the hood. Reach in there and unplug the vacuum hose that goes right to the EGR valve, and stick a golf tee in the hose. Now the EGR won't come on at all. Go drive 0-60mph real fast, and see how you won't feel, see, hear, smell, taste, (or get), any faster. Last edited by mrnickleye; 11-05-2005 at 04:23 AM. |
