Please Help Me Out
Hi, ive had a 92 supra for four months now, ive changed all the shocks and springs and all that, also new tires, and thats about it, no rust no nothing, the only problem ive noticed that really bugs me is that at around 60 mph i start feeling vibration and also sometimes in 2nd gear, from somewhere and after i pass 60 it goes away, if i go under 60 it goes away, at first i thought it was the driveshaft, so then i put the car on stands and ran it and i noticed the driveshaft was moving, so i thought thats the problem, so i got a straight aluminum driveshaft and changed it, the 2nd gear vibration went away but the 60mph thing was still there!! but not as bad, then i did another test, i went 60 and put it in neutral still made the vibration, so it aint the tranny. im just really lost on this topic could someone please help me out. THANK YOU.

Have you tried balancing your rims? can you be more specific on the vibration, lopy? Or comes on fast? fast oscillation? soft or hard?

Its not lopy its constant, the fast u go it gets worse acually ive noticed, and it makes a unique inside noise that cant be described. so is there anything else besides the tires that can make that noise, the differencial is not making the noise for sure. Thank you for your response.

do you have after market rims??
my supra did that to, not at 60, more around 100..any way it could be that your rim has play around the hub...go to your local tire store and buy some spacers, your rims will seat alot tighter, it cost me 8 bucks and solved my vibration problem.....good luck |
Stock rims sorry to say...

hmm, how about your wheel bearings? what makes you think it isn't the differential?
|
thats what i was going to say...wheel bearings..and maybe if your bearings were
replaced before you bought the car, who ever replaced them waited to long to do the job and actually ground the hub...it's happend to me, on my alltrac |
Was the drive shaft balanced?? A drive shaft out of balance will give a low 'drone' sound. Like a deep Hmmmmm.
Tires out -o- balance will usually give a vibration, but not a sound. They usually shake at around 55mph, then smooth out, then might vibrate again at a higher speed. |
drain and refill your rearend this could be your problem aswell low fluid could cause this to

Is it just at 60 mph that you notice this or is it the the same rpm range that you feel the vibration? It could be anything from the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine to the balancers in the engine to something happening to the clutch or input shaft bearing. Usually at 60 my car is pretty smooth, but I do feel the trans making a little vibration. As I rev the engine up the engine makes more vibration. Toyota put balancers in the engine to help stop that, but they had to lower the red line because of all that rotating mass. The 92 engine has those balancers.
Let us know if we are getting close! Russ |
yes the driveshaft was balanced, its not the wheel bearings, at 60mph i feel it then it goes away until like 5-10 mph more and all the times it does it.

What tires do you have on it? Its pretty common for tires to give those sort of problems. Cheap tires, retreads, remolds, flat spots, balancing, theres a heap of reasons tires can do this. The fact that you can put it in Neutral and doesnt affect the problem suggests that the tires are contributing to this problem. Or, somethings bent.lol :D

well after all that searching around for obvious things and not finding the problem you may have to take a serious look at the underbody of your car.something sounds outta place/broke.good luck

I cannot remember, does the 92 come with a carrier bearing on the driveshaft? if it does, check that. One problem though, on my 87, the only way to get a new carrier bearing is from the dealership. very pricey.
