Can some of you guys give me some info on these cars?
I recently testdrove (tore the shit out of) a 1987 5 speed Turbo Supra. It didnt seem very fast at all compared to my 383 '95 trans am, but I didnt expect it too. The douschbag car salesman was dumb enough to let me and my buddy take it for a testdrive by ourselves because i said i wanted to make sure the transmission shifted nice.
Needless to say, at this moment i feel bad for what i did to that poor car. LOL, me and my friend really had some fun in that car for the 10 mintues that we drove it. Ive never driven a turbo car before and that supra was very fun to drive even though it wasnt very fast. I read up on it and a webpage said they run about 15.3's. How hard or easy are these MKiii's to mod, and how well do they react to turbo/engine modifications? What are their similarities to the older and newer supras. I considerd doing a project car supra mkiii and frankly, obviously, i know absolutely nothing about them. Can you guys share some basic info with me to help me out. Ive never owned an import (or that many cars for that matter) and I turned 18 not too long ago. I have always been amuzed by turbos. Can you guys help me out. Share with me what times you run and what times stock supras run with some modifications and the block limitations. Im avid member of LS1Tech.com and was just checking this site out after i had some fun in that poor little supra. Jimmy PS* Please dont flame me because i beat the crap out of a supra. i think i can honestly bang gears better in that car than i can in my 6 speed Trans am lol. |

k well... you didn't ask anything specific so here goes with lots of annoying info lol
3.0 single turbo 7MGTE engine 230bhp stock running 6ish psi 15.2-15.4 stock depending on driver original head gasket likes to blow out in the most unfortunate time ever (due to not being torqued down correctly from the factory.. should be 72ft lbs on stock bolts) cat back exhaust & intake should get you in 14's boost controller with above should get you low 14's intercooler and hardpipes and above i would expect 13's weigh in the vicinity of 3400-3800lbs depending on options that's all i can think of writing at the mo hehe

i know everyone says it but use a the search...
But anyway they are really easy to mod and get into the 13's. Alot of peopel put down at least 350 hp at the wheels. Just make sure it dosent have a bhg then you are all set. |

dont worry, i was expecting to the "use the search" response because over at LS1Tech.com, nobody likes to search and all the n00b's get flamed. Thanx for not flaming me.
About the BHG issue, is there anyway i could torque it down myself.....maybe? You guys have been very helpful. Is there any diference in the mkiii motors to the mkIV motors. Also the transmissions? ***SuprraGirl.....was taking a look at your build pics, the car looks amazing but, it doent look like you put alot of clearcoat over the metallic yellow. It's probably just the picture but the paint doesnt look very smooth. VERY NICE RIDE. How much horsepower are looking to put down at XXPSI? Last edited by Big Jimbo; 01-06-2006 at 11:36 PM. |

the w58 trannie is "basically" the same but not totally but change the bellhousing and it will bolt up
that's the end of the similarities between the mk3 and mk4 my car still has a few bits which need more paint on them as they missed but there is slight colour problems which probly at the end of this year i will get the whole car repainted again but it will do for now once i've upgraded the compressor housing on the turbo i plan to get my goal of 400whp on 15psi

Weird, I thought Road & Track tested the MKIII @ 14.3, that's with an automatic. Anywayz, the MKIII & MKIV definitely have heritage but are 2 seperate entities. As far as resonsiveness to modification, they respond well. Especially to exhaust modification. Their transmissions (manual) and drivetrains are very robust, as well as their bottom-end, which has been know to support 600+ HP (fairly reliably). If you get one, don't even think about changing the cams because they can support up to 700 HP.
