NEED HELP...Does white smoke = BHG?
hi guys, my car has 200 000 + miles and was bone stock until I got a hold of it...but after a couple of weeks of my new setup: I installed K&N air filter, 3" turbo-back cat-less exhaust, and shimmed wastegate. I started to notice white smoke out of the exhaust when I was stopped...
could this be a sign of a blown head gasket? :frown: or could it be something else? :dunno: thanks |
could be, white exhaust means moisture, expecially with that many miles.

Keep an eye on the radiator fluid level. If you start having to add coolant every few days, and there is no sign of a leak on the ground, then the coolant is going into the engine. Keep an eye on the oil to.
Milky looking oil means coolant is getting into it. |
thanks for the help, i'll take a carefull look at the coolent level and the oil...better start saving for the head gasket...
is thicker better when it comes to a metal head gasket? i was thinking of buying an HKS 2mm head gasket. |
Thicker is better if your going for big boost. I believe there are 2 MHG's below 2mm, HKS 1.2mm and the Greddy 1.5mm. Pick one of those if you know for sure your car will not see an aftermarket turbo.

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong but don't you need to have the head AND block machined when you install a metal head gasket? I'm under the impression that unless you plan to run massive boost that a Toyota HG and ARP bolts will be sufficient.
|
would a mhg eleminate the possibility of a bhg? just curious
|
Installed correctly I've heard of cars putting down 750+ hp with no HG problems.
|
for metal head gaskets both surfaces are required to be machined
mhgs or even stock as long as they are torqued down correctly eliminate the hg problem you say it's at idle.... and you are sure it's white smoke? not blue? |
thanks for all the help, and it is white smoke...
2 more question, whats the correct torque for the studs (planing on buiyng ARP) when installing the MHG? this may seam kind of stupid but, do I have to go to a machine shop to get your block and head machined prior to installing the metal head gasket, or could a mechanic do it at his own shop? thanks for all the support everbody. :) |
