Hey I just got a mkiii and there are a few problems with it but it was cheap so I couldnt say no. So I was just wondering if these problems are going to be an easy fix. First the running lights dont work(I dont know if its just wiring or what). Next it has a hot start problem this is what I am most woried about it will die after I start it when it is hot for a couple tries and I have to keep the revs up myself for a couple seconds. And temp gauge is really messed up it will go all the way up and then go half way. How complicated can these problems be.

by running lights i assume you mean your headlights? if so check your fuses in the engine bay you may find them blown
is your mk3 turbo?
have you run a diagnostic? check the faq's for the "how to" on diagnostics

your temperature... this may or may not be an expensive exercise... first i would check you don't have air bubbles in your water system... when you start your car cold does it gurgle in the dashboard?
it could be your clutch fan on its way out, could be just a crook temp sensor
does it jump around quickly or gradually climb and drop?

answer these first and i'll continue
