Pop an 02 sensor in, because it is the main sensor for fuel mixture. It actually should be changed every few years anyway, or 60k miles.
This has always been recommended maintenance.

Also, I ready a report/study that was done for the government, and it claimed the USA could save 10 billion barrels of oil per year if vehicles got a new 02 every 3 years.

Cool

i ran into this a couple of summer s ago

i replaced the oxygen sensor but it didn't help
i replaced the 2 vsv valves( fuel and egr )on the intake side . that smoothed it out .
i use an air/fuel gauge and it let me know i had the problem to begin with

What kind of gas mileage should it get on the highway without a lead foot??

I get about 20 mpg and I smell gas. I assume this is the same problem mentioned here.

20-25mpg hwy seems to be the norm. You should not be smelling fuel. You may have a leak at some hose or fitting.

yea i would check out the 02 sensor. thats the first thing that i went to when i was running rich. i noticed that i was getting really crappy mileage. so i popped in a new one, and its sooo much better. (well not anymore cuz my HG blew, so its not moving haha). but when i changed it, it made a huge difference. i converted the mpg figures, and i should average about 400kms per tank. and i get better than that now. almost 450, so im pretty happy about it all.

Thanks for the info. I'll be replacing that O2 sensor for sure now.
