I have an 89 w/auto. (which works good), but have investigated it so when the day comes, I have an understanding of it.
Both of the above answers should be followed. You (anyone) can pull the trans pan yourself and put a filter in. I did mine 2 mo. ago. $25. 80k miles on it. Not a speck of metal, and just a smearing of varnish on the bottom of the pan. The screen looked totally clean. I've done this to about 100 Toyotas when I was at the dealership, and they all looked like mine. Toyotas don't disenigrate like fords and chevys. You'll need about 3-4 qts of dex3 to fill back up. Try it out after that. Also, there are machines now that hook into the cooler lines and they flush out ALL the fluid. We charge $140 for that service. Try the filter thing and see if it helps. A rebuild job here costs $1500.
