ok i know this is gonna sound stupid but the only way i can put an intake on my supra is if my dad sees in print what exactly an intake does. so can anyone tell me what an intake actually does, and if it improves gas miles.

An intake is just gunna put more air in the engine and make it get air to the engine easier. It probably could give you better gas mileage i'm not completely sure but it certainly isn't going to hurt your engine or car. So tell your dad its ok theres not gunna be any problem with it.

Er, what kind of "intake" did you have in mind? Intakes cover everything from the air inlet to the valve itself.

So lets go over everything. IF your trubo charged then the turbo inlet pipe is the first part of your intake. The big thing here is more volume due to increased diameter. Although this is behind the MAF sensor it again is allowing easier aspiration of the engine. IF you buy an FPIK kit from K&N or a 3" inlet kit from suprasport or someone you have a larger filter apature so you can fit a more free flowing filter.If your NA then your replacing infront of the MAF the same and behind it you'd be getting a short ram intake to increase efficency of flow and again volume.

If your turbocharged there is a whole seperate run of things that a better IC, larger IC pipping, different compressor wheel will do but it sounds like your not quite there yet.

So next on both vehicles is the intake manifold. Again its just more air moving more effeciently making the engine work less to get air. Yes there is a barly noticable increase in fuel efficency and usually a few horses from 1000rpm before redline up.

Unfortunately the 7M engines don't have much in the way of aftermarket intakes, unlike all the variations of say a chevy 350. You can buy better tubing that feeds the intake for a turbo, along with a better intercooler and a better filter, but as for the intake itself you are not going to find much out there and if you do it will entail much modifying and expense.

Now you can port and polish the intake system and match all the intake and exhaust ports which will help some. You can also go with a mm larger intake and exhaust valve for a little better flow. I have said before that I personally feel that a set of 3 Weber's and intake would really wake this engine up, but I have never seen one.
