Braided Stainless Flex Joint in Downpipe
As I slowly get my 1990 Turbo back together after a BHG, I discovered a crack/corroded area in the stock metal exhaust bellows/expansion joint close to the turbo outlet elbow. I called a "high perf" muffler/exhaust place in town and they said they'd make AND install a simple exh. pipe with the correct flanges on each end for only $80. Sounds good-I don't need the cat. up by the turbo anyway-my 1988 Turbo doesn't have one. I had thought the 1988's came this way, but the serv. man. shows the NA Supras have only 1 cat., while all the turbos have 2.
So I crawled under my 1988 (oil change time anyway) expecting to see a factory-supplied straight metal downpipe, but what I found was shiny heavy-duty stainless braided flex. joint. This thing looks to be a lot higher quality than what I think Toy. would supply, so does anyone know who makes them?

Pretty much every Aftermarket DP is built with a stainless braided joint. Some are soild expansion chamber looking bits but most are braided.

Thanks. My local high-perf. muffler shop says they'll make me a new pipe w/SS flex joint AND install it for ~$140. Only the joint will be SS.
BTW, after I got the rear cat. off I looked thru it--looked fine. I noticed that it seems to have a pretty big flow area, so I guessing the muffler has the most restriction of the whole exhaust-esp. since I opened up the entire elbow ID with my die grinder.
