So anyway, these cars will give a tappet noise after a bunch of miles since the last 'good' valve clearance adjust. They use shims, and are usually only done when the headgasket is being replaced, and the head goes to the machine shop. But Many folks (and shops) just yank the head off and replace the gasket without doing the head, or adjustment.

I strongly recommend the head go to the machine shop when ever its off.

If the noise is really loud, it is possible to adjust the clearance. Do a search to find a thread with the proceedures. Its not easy, nor a fun job, as I've done it on several supras. The Toyota Special tools really help.

As for the toy dealer doing it, I don't recommend this, as there very likely won't be a tech there that's done it before. And I don't think you want yours to be the first.
