Looking into purchasing a 91 supra w/ bad motor
Hey guys, new to your forum but always have been interested in the supra's. i have a question: I found a 1991 supra in town for $700/offer but it has a catch: a bad motor. From doing some research i find you guys saying the head gaskets were a big problem. (I havent talked to the owner or anything, they weren't there). I was thinking, if you guys thought it was worth it, i might look into getting it and if i have to i found engines on ebay for $500-1000. I would like to go turbo with it but im confused: it seems there are no aftermarket kits for it? I see most people were just talking about changing the whole motor for the factory turbo one, but i thought there might be an easier way?
The car looks great on the outside. Its Red, N/A, 5-speed, the interior was a little more worn but not bad for a 15 year old car. Sorry if i repeated questions but, what do you guys think? Im just not sure if this would be an alright project? Any help is welcome, I appreciate it! Thanks, Ryan |
sorry if i asked questions if they've been asked before, going to look more into the car tomorrow.. ill search for more info, i just sometimes dont have a lot of time..thanks guys!

Putting a turbo on an N/A can be done, but it really is a lot of work. Most just buy a car with the turbo engine in the car. Don't let this discourage you though from making a swap, it is just that there are differences in the turbo and the N/A engine and not to mention extra sensors under the hood and modifications made to the oiling and cooling of the turbo itself.
The Turbo engines have 2 knock sensors on them to the N/A's 2. this helps control detonation much better. Usually the afm is different, the throttle linkages are different, stonger transmission and stronger clutch. See what I mean as the differences. Let us know and good luck. Russ |
doesnt sound too bad... do you think that the car might be worth the price?
