The gauge is very reliable. The sending unit in the tank wears out. It moves up and down with your fuel usage, and it bounces around with the fuel sloshing.
It is a reostat, which changes the flow of current to the gauge, to make the gauge move. You must pull the tank to replace it. Might as well put a new pump in while you are there.
