whats up with my fuel guage?
im wondering if the symptoms of slow to respond fuel level is normal for my mkIII with a digital display. i havent been in the tank yet. i work on fighter jets and they have "probes" with no moving parts that use the fuel as a dielectric. is this something like what toyota uses, or am i just over thinking the problem of some stuck floats? any info that would prevent an unnecessary tank drop would be greatly appreciated. thanks -oki' 92

My car does stuff like this too. If i fill it all the way, Itll read an empty tank or bounce back and forth for at least 3 or 4 days. And then next time i drive itll be at half or below. The when it gets low (>1/4) Itll stay whereever till the ignition is turned off. Then when its back on it moves to where it is supposed to be. But if i fill it to like 3/4 its fine and doesnt do anthing unusual. Does anyone think this is a gauge or the sending unit? Im trying to get everything fixed before i sell it

Parts wear out.
The gauge is very reliable. The sending unit in the tank wears out. It moves up and down with your fuel usage, and it bounces around with the fuel sloshing.
It is a reostat, which changes the flow of current to the gauge, to make the gauge move. You must pull the tank to replace it. Might as well put a new pump in while you are there.
