I have a great deal of respect for you, and the vast knowledge you present on Supras. BUT....YOU need to go unscrew the little lever on the door post and, using a flashlight, look inside to see that it does indeed control another lever (white) inside the body. That is the release switch for the seatbelt, in the event that it is 'locked' (like it does in a sudden stopping action) when the door opens. You can also (while parked) 'feel' the ratcheting action when pulling the shoulder harness in and out when the lever is in the 'door-closed' position. If the lever is broken, you won't have any problems until the seatbelt gets 'stuck' in a locked position and you want to get out.

Also, something like 'sabotage' said, the tension is 'lightened' so when you lean forward while belted in, there is not as much tension on you. Just go pull on the shoulder harness while moving the lever, and 'feel' the tension differences.
Also..... peace & love to all.

Mine is an '89 N/A, here in USA. What year is yours, Suprra Girl??
I'm suspecting that it may have been a USA thing, a year model thing, or your inside parts may have been removed. Mine operates as described in earlier post, with the inner part of the lever contacting a white plastic (spring loaded) lever inside the door post. P.S. We sure do come up with some weird/interesting things on our cars. Its a fetish with Supra owners, I suppose. We wanna know wtf things are, and wth they do.

i pulled mine apart and it does come into contact with a white cam lever off the seat belt mechanism. it does make a ratcheting sound on my car when the lever is depressed. and that sound is not there when its not depressed. its not for the lights thats the push button just next to it. and it does seem to help the door open up. as far as the alarm switch i think thats ties into the lock mechanism but im not sure on that one.

I figured it out....the US NTSB (national traffic safety board) makes car manufacturers do all sorts of 'safety device' things to allow them to import to america. (Thats why cars keep costing more and more.) Why, just next year we'll be required to drive with a special suit that plugs into the dash. If there's a crash, the suit will blow up (like an airbag) and we'll just "roll" out of the car. :P I just hope it de-flates in a minute, otherwise we'll be have people "rolling down the hiway" all over the place.
