2JZ Swap? possible?`
 

Hey, I want my 88 Supra to become a manual trans, so I have been looking into doing a sawp. While I was researching and doing some figures, my mechanic said if Ihave a high milage engine (which I do) Id be stuid not to do a rebuild/swap. So that got me thinking. Can I swap a Twin Turbo 2JZE engine and 6 spd tranny into my 88 Supra? Any info or experiance on this swap?

For the transmission, you will need to bang out the tranny tunnel as well as cut the hole where the shifter comes out of an inch or so because the tranny is a bit longer than the auto. It would take extensive modification on the wiring harness to make everything work correctly. You would also need to bang in the firewall a little. The rear turbo wont fit.

But yes, it is very possible. And there are quite a few guys out there with 2jz MKIIIs. Just need some money.

its totally possible. i was at the nopi event last weekend at the maryland international raceway (mir) and there was a mkiii supra with a 2jz, it was in the pro class and ran a 9! a 9! i wanted to just hump it

Ok, so the 2Jz swap seems more like a head ache then I need. I dont want to F*** with my fire wall, or my wire harness if I can help it. So it sounds like my best bet is to buy a JDM 7MGTE? is the correct? Im also still wanting to g 5 speed. Do I still have to do all the tunnel and shifter hole modifications if I still with the tranny matching the 7MGTE? Also, I was looking into ways to twin turbo the 7MGTE. I came up with a company that makes Turbos that mount under your car! has anyone had any experiance with these?

You'd still need to trim the hole about an inch. Ive never heard of a company that does it. Just keep the turbos where they are supposed to be. And in my opinion, Id stay with a single turbo. There is a reason the MKIV guys go to a single turbo. But yea, the idea of a TT 7M is cool. There is a guy on the other forum with one. He has a buildup thread and all that.

i say stick to a single turbo. unless you have extensive knowledge of engines and motors i would leave the thinking to toyota. i just bought a jdm 7mgte, ill keep you guys posted once i begin my work on it.

If you're really desperate for a 6-speed box, i know Quaife sometimes have gearboxes available that are direct replacement for the factory unit - but have different internals. I had a UKDM Ford Type-9 Style 5-speed in my Sierra XR4x4, and after the engine swap (2.8litre 160bhp OHV V6 came out, 550bhp 3.0 litre 24v QOHC V6 went in), the box was the next thing on my list. Quaife did, and to my knowledge still does, a 6-speed version of the box, made with all alloy main case, alloy belhousing & quaife's own transfer box tailhousing. Cost the better part of ?6000 (about $9500?) but damn it's a good box. Virtually indestructible! :D

What do you consider to be high mileage? What does your mechanic consider to be high mileage?
On this car, I really think that they last longer than other engines (but do tend to have leaks).
I have had, seen, inspected, & had professionally inspected two 7M Engines.
And both did not even need to be bored after 120kmis and 140kmis.

Be wary of what mechanics tell you or how they try to sway you.
If it works fine, don't change it. That is my opinion.
If you did a leak down test or a compression test, then that is one thing; but to say you need a rebuild just because it has--what you/your mechanic say is--high mileage is another issue.

No, my mechanic said that while I was sawpping over from a Auto to 5 speed, I should o an engine swap also. My engine has over 250,000 km;s on it...I not saying it is done..it pulls hard and strong...but why put in a nice new tranny, to hve the engine go a year later..

On that note, does anyone know a good JDM import place in Canada? I looked into Japanmotorimports.com but they didnt seem to want to answer any of my emailed questions. They always just gave me vague responses, or disregarded certain questions all togther, even when asked repetedly!

What Im looking for is a JDM 7MGTE AND (this is important) a matching 5 speed tranny. Even if I could just get the tranny, Id rebuild my engine over the winter months while the car is off the road anyways...but I would like a JDM 7MGTE....anyways
