custom intake ?'s
i want to make a custom intake with these pipes (link below). could just go to lowes or somewhere and have them bend the pipe?http://www.suprasport.com/product.as...d=452&catid=48
pipes^^^ the inlet in the picture below is 2.75" http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...Picture067.jpg would i get 2.75" pipe or 3.00inch pipe? should i use couplers that are 2.75, do the couplers stretch or would i get 3.00 couplers?http://www.suprasport.com/view_category.asp?cat=86 <<couplers also the AFM is 3.00" wide so how would i connect the 3.00inch AFM opening to the 2.75inch opening ? http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a8/...Picture068.jpg any help would be appreciated. |
Intake
I wouldn't recommend using metal for your intake pipe as it will just soak up all that exhaust heat and defeat the purpose. You can search around some of the aftermarket speed shops and see if someone has a tapered non metallic that has those dimensions on the end but I'd just stick with the stock
one, or get a reducer to fit the top one. You can see what I mean here, look at the fittings. http://www.simota.com.au and click on the fittings. You have to take in consideration the small hose that goes to the rack and pinion from the bottom of the first boot from the AFM. Just get rid of the airbox and add a filter like the AEM or Simota. You will need an adapter for the cone that attatches to your AFM. |
ok, i was just pondering the idea.lol. those pipes are aluminum by the way... i dont think is matters though. i am definetly going to get an intake prolly the k/n fipk only because the blitz bolt on filter is over $200 and ppl left good feedback for the k/n filter at suprasport.com

Tomorrow I'll take some pics of what I did you might be interested to see how I acomplished what your trying for next to zero cost.

yo weezl this is thanx to you too i thinkis the final setup that i will use
sori for the pics (took it with a camera phone) with this setup i also moved the afm, one good purpose is to free up some space in the front, on the 1st pic the red circle is a 2.75 to 3 inch coupler with a 45 degree bend the blue lines is a 22 degree bend pipe from pepboys cone filter from pepboys (i advice getting k&n filters, theyre better) the green lines is a 2.5 to 3 inch coupler that i used to insert the duct that lead to the bottom front of the car last one is a 3 inch plastic tubing pretty long actually it goes all the way down to the bottom slits in the front and i used some zip ties to anchor it to the bottom grill, if you are gonna do the duct too, u need to cut a hole in the plastic cover behind your fog light underneath the car you dont need to disassemble your headlights either like S.O.G.I. said jus use the oblong shaped hole under the headlights, i think this is where the old inlet goes , so all this setup would coust u around 30 bucks pretty cheap for a cold air intake dunt u think? |
afm n things
couple questions...
1.when you moved the afm did u have to extend any wires or do any cutting or does it just move up there pretty easy? 2.the air duct...did that connect directly to your cone filter or is it sitting there? 3.is there a website to get the pipe from?i tried pepboys.com. and the coupler in red,the 45deg one, was that the stock one? |
1 Attachment(s)
the afm was no problem at all, the wires will fit perfectly to its new position, no cuttin involved with this all you need is clamps to hold it in
the air duct has a coupler in the end and i used zip ties and i used the old harness where the old filter bolts on to as an anchor so it wont fall if i hit a bump or anything, but the hole on top of the filter is 2.5 inches and it secures pretty good with the step down coupler the 45 degree coupler was used in the car b4 , the old owner maed a semi-cold air intake, which was not even good , nd i jusd used it when i was improvising my intake, you can find those at any good shops jus ask for it , cuz the shop that i go to can even custom fit me one in any color , but thats jus for looks for me and i will do that later on hopefully i was any help to u and good luck look at this pic thats the old setup that he did , its was pretty crappy cuz it wasnt even sealed, and god knows what got into the engine with his dumbass, but this is where i got the 45 deg. maybe if u look at the stock system u can salvage one from it too |

one more thing i almost forgot, there is one hose that goes to ur intake hoses that u wont have anywhere to put when u do the piping for the cold air intake
here's a solution that i did : buy those breathers from pepboys too, take out the hose from where its connected to idk what its called but its by the oil filter. theres a snag in this process: the breather is too big for the thing that u put in it, solution: cut off a segment from the old hose then put it inside the breather so the hole will get tighter then put it in and jus use a clamp to hold it down hopefully that helps got pics but crappy phone tho |

one last thing...
to make it plain and simple, i dont get how you did the things in yellow in the attachment below. -first circle (top) i dont get how you attached the end of the AFM to the piping -second circle- piping to the filter and for pepboys did u order online for their pipes and breathers or what? |
Filter
What are you using to block off all the hot air from the rad and the exhaust from entering the filter?
|
hes not, him and I went over this...but he doesnt listen too well
I got super busy with my tail light mod today, I promise tomorrow I will show you what I did, with pictures you can actually see something in...and I promise you, it will be a super cheap and easy cold air intake that actually...ummm....gets cold air...? |
lol ok, it would also be easier for someone to give me a list of stuff and where to get each thing after explaining it.
but take your time... |
Well I can get you started on your list of stuff...
what you will need is:
write up with pictures to come in a few hours...its time for coffee first |
youre wrong weezl,,, i do listen im fabricating a heatshield right now. comon u know i ask u almost everything in here and so far u've been right , now why wouldnt i listen to u ??

Ok so here is my set up top to bottom (minus my cold air scoop, its too hard to take pictures of and I didnt feel like taking it all out to show ya's)
So like I said you need a piece of 3'' steel pipe 13inches long (mine was 14 inches and its too long, but I was too lazy to get out a hacksaw and cut it) your gonna butcher your stock system so be careful, make sure you want to do this before you start as there is no going back once you start! to get started take your old stock system out and remove the two hose pieces from the air chamber. Take the top rubber elbow and fit it over the 3" pipe piece. Its gonna be a really tight fit and you want to be careful not to split it. I found that using a hair dryer to warm up the rubber real good gave it more give and reduces the chance that you will split it trying to get it on. now take the other piece of hose and cut it about 1 to 1.5 inches below the hose fitting that is on the underside of it. make sure you have enough of it to go over your AFM box but not so short that the fitting ends up blocked when its stretched over the AFM. If in doubt cut it long and test fit everything first. then adjust as needed. Its also going to be a tight fit over the AFM, but using the hair dryer and some screwdrivers you can force it over kind of like doing a bicycle tire, again take your time and be careful not to split it. Put your filter on your AFM, fit the 3" pipe to the elbow now stretched over your AFM, (you should now have a complete system, from the top elbow all the way to the filter) and fit the whole unit onto your Throttle body. Tighten all your hose clamps if you havent already. You will likely need to bend the mount bar for the AFM to make it line up and bolt to the inner fender, but it should be pretty close at this point. Done! one clean nice intake system for next to no cost. I used steel wool on my pipe to shine it up some, but you could paint it you wanted to as well. Here are the pics: http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/intake-001.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/intake-002.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/intake-003.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/intake-004.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/intake-005.jpg |
Very nice Explaination and set up! JW what did u use for your airscoop?...also where did you get your air filter, i am pricing them and deciding what to buy, do you like it? lemme know
|
I got my air filter from Autozone, its just a filter so I really dont see the point in paying for K&N. I got the kind that has the inverse cone opening at the top cause I wanted to duct in fresh air from the front of the car.
Long story short I consider myself a master of low budget mods. for my outside air duct I used various pieces I found in junkyards from stock air intakes. The piece that "scoops" the air is off a late 80's ford Truck. Its flat and has a hole already in the flat end of it where it mounts on the Ford, so I was able to screw that underneath my front bumper (basically to the plastic cover that seals the right side under the headlight) then with some other pieces I found I connected that through the oval opening that the original air box gets air from. I noticed a difference in throttle responce and can hear my filter sucking when I thump the throttle...Im quite pleased with it. |
i hate to ask so many questions but did your filter from autozone come with the mount to mount it to your AFM? and was the filter made for the supra or is it one of those universal ones?
|
The filter is universal and I had to buy the MAF adapter there too. I forget what I paid for it, but the filter was the mid priced one, and they only had it in Blue. Thus began my color scheme...lol

My botch job
2 Attachment(s)
I tried the pipe idea and scrapped it the same day because the pipe was so hot and I couldn't find a heat blanket anywhere so this is still a work in progress for me.
My box is sheet aluminum cut and bent to shape, held together with pop rivets and covered with leftover fiberglass insulation pieces from a building under constuction that they used to insulate the CAC. I still have to either cover the top or change the rubber up top to seal with the hood closed. kind of a hack job first effort. Jeez guess I need to clean the engine bay up some. |
the air moving through the pipe doesnt stick around long so I doubt it has much time to heat up due to heat transfer.

wussap i jus got my heatshield done,, and to tell you the truth ist nothing short of ghetto,, but, its really functional, and i did my best to make it look good,,
the only materials that i used was a plastic water bucket, and those insulations that they put in car windows to deflect heat,, cuz they actually work pretty good, i checkd it already got pics here and waiting to get critized (weezl??) |
finished

nice job finishing the heatshield Supra2NR it's a good idea. you really changed your intake around in the past few days. the tems covers look good too.
i decided to go with the air duct and the cheap inverse (whatever its called) air filter for mine in the end. see attached pics. for now...no metal piping. i can feel the difference after i put the filter on. i think the air duct has a big part on it also. for the duct i used this stretchy/bendy tubing from home depot. it was hard getting it in but worth it. |
finnally got sum praise from sumbody but im not breathin yet, i havent heard from weezl, he always got sumthin to say , which is always fun ,, but thanks again, i think im stickin to the white and blue color scheme with my car, im gonna get those silicone hoses next so i can dress up my engine,

Well, I dont really have much to say except your camera phone blows...and sucks....it sucks and blows at the same time...Im sorry, but it does, Im sorry
as far as your air box goes, I wasnt impressed with your parts list, but hey Ive used stranger things and made them work out real nice in the end. In fact tomorrow if the rain holds off, Im going to build a new front lip out of vinyl baseboard material from Home Depot. I built one of these before for one of my Celicas and they come out suprisingly nice considering what its made out of. I plan to put some extra fog lights in it (mostly for show since they are only going to be about 3-4 inches off the ground. I will make a new thread dedicated to it. For now, I guess I will say while you arent going to win any show and shine prizes for your air box, if it works and you like it, thats all that matters. |
thats funny, everybody notice this,,, he jus critized me he did not say that i did sumthin wrong,, thats a first
how nice of u weezl:D |
Im not sure I criticized you at all. You and I just have different ideas of whats cool or not. You made an air box out of an old bucket, I said if you like it...great.
I got stalled on my front lip today, cause Im just tired today, and half the metal brackets I bought broke in half when I tried to bend them, so I gotta go back to the hardware store tomorrow...just dont feel like it today. |
what did u use again to make the lip for your celica,, cuz i took the front lip out of my supra cuz its was bent out of shape anyways now, im thinkin of getting or making a wind diffuser ,, do u have any idea what material would be good for this?
|
What in the world is a wind diffuser?
I am using vinyl wall base moulding to make my front lip. If I ever get back to it... |
its basically a fibergalss piece that replaces tha lip on the front and it diverts air to the vents and reduces drag from wind resistance..
|
2 Attachment(s)
are these what youre talking about? how do you 'make' one?
|
1 Attachment(s)
no those are jus sum aftermarket lips,, they look good and all but if you get the wrong ones they actually jus add more resistence,, theres only sum manufacturers that actually took this problem and came up with solutions,, like veilside, extreme dimensions, and another one but i cant remember the name wind diffusers look like the one in the pic
|
Thats great for the track but not really road worthy for normal street driving.
It would come in handy in the winter as a snow plow though I bet. |

OK well, since this thread is jacked anyways, I'll just post the pics of my new front lip I finished making today... materials list:
Result: http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/spoiler4.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/spoiler1.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/spoiler2.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~kthaney/files/spoiler3.jpg I tell ya...it turned out even better than my last one I built for my 73 celica! |
looks cold dude, since you get materials from household prods. any idea what will b good to use in making a diffuser?
like u said the thread is jackd anyways so might as well bring this up |
Sup2nr, I dont know what could be used to make anything like that pic you posted...I would have to look around at Home depot for a while...LOL!
See my whole thing is about making stuff thats cheap, keeps me busy, and can be reasonable well engineered to look decent in the end. A wind diffuser like your talking about would have to be fairly rigid and also stand up to some abuse on the street. off the top of my head, about the only idea I come up with for making one is out of wallboard, then glassing over it for strength and weather resistance. Ive worked with fiberglass before and its a total pain in the pooper...I itched for like 2 days afterwards, and dont want to do that again anytime soon. |
Oh and ona side note I ordered some steel mesh to redo both front openings next week. Still trying to decide if I want to paint it white or leave it silver (dont think its chromed...
|
how did this thread get turned into a topic about front lips?
and if you ever finish your wind diffuser supra2nr post some pics cuz i wanna see the result. weezl...i guess $38.08 is the cheaper way to go than spending 400 on a b&m or bomex lip. |
Quote:
hell yeah its cheaper, might not have the coolness factor of one of those, but sure makes up for it in lack of cost...and if I ever rash it real bad ona driveway or something...I can go buy a new cover for it for about 4 bucks! |
