Well I have removed a hatch from one of these cars before.
They are held on by two hinges.
I have pics that come can be useful because I sell parts. heh
Is is possible that the bolts are not on tight enough on that hatch.

How about where the end of the hatch latches on to the back of the car--maybe that needs lubing?

Is it possible that someon could drive the car for you while you sit in the back of it and figure out where it is coming from?

That is all if it is indeed from the hatch, and not something else.

Default Rubber stops

Also check the little rubber stops on either side mounted towards the bottom of the hatch on the car. The screws seemed to be torqued down to 100 foot pounds. I stripped mine trying to take them out but if the rubber is worn as mine are they will let the hatchback wobble which could be causing the rattle.

Default hatch rattle

It just rattles when I hit potholes, or am driving on a less then perfect road surface, but I mean its pretty loud and obvious. I'll check the bolts and such....When the hatch was open, I gave it a little shake, to see if the hinges were loose, they didnt seem to be, but I'll look again...thanks

I am thinking that the rubber stoppers have worn out and the hatch is now sitting too low and the latch is now loose and rattling. Possibly the rubber seal around the hatch is worn too, but you can adjust the latch and have it pull the hatch down tighter if you need to.

You are not gonna be able to adjust the hatch. You can still get those rubber stops, and those stops on each "side". All should be in contact with the hatch when it is closed.

That hatch weighs a ton, and jiggles alot on the road.

I have had some success, for the last 3 years, with a tiny dab of vaseline smeared on all those stops. Mine's starting to rattle a little now, so I'm going out right now and add a little.

OK, I'm back. I'll let you know in a couple of days if it's still working.

Also, I was thinking that if it still rattles, I'll try adding a couple of layers of tape on the hatch at the places the stops rub. This will take up any clearance, and may help.
