well all signs say I have a BHG. I've been trying to make myself think I dont but its time I face the music....what is involved in replacing it? what are the steps in doing so? what would be the best gasget to buy to insure it doesnt happen again? im pretty much looking for the whole deal. front to back how am i going to go about solving this problem without thinking halfway into the project i shouldnt have taken on the task?

oh! I forgot. I have a 86 non turbo. im sure that info might help you answer my question.

86 or 86.5? Im assuming 86.5 since you posted in the mk3 forum. So going on that assumption....

The least expensive and easiest thing to do for the BHG is to get a quality stock replacement gasket (by quality I mean a good brand) and a set of ARP head bolts. Clean your parts well when doing this. Use chemical cleaners on the head to remove the residue of the old gasket because scratching it with a scraper is a real bad deal. I would recommend since you already have the head off, having it rebuilt anyways but you dont have to. It kinda depends on if you want to do this job again sometime down the road. Put it all back together and torque the head bolts properly (in sequence and in stages) to...I'm unsure of the spec on ARP bolts but I know the stock ones can take 75lbs...someone else here know the torque specs for ARP?

If you follow that you should pretty much be safe from ever having a BHG again.

yeah its and 86.5. I was thinking the same thing about rebuilding it while i had it all apart. so any idea on what this is going to cost or how much time i will need to complete the job? just replacing the gasget not with the rebuild.

$100 for the arp bolts

$2-300 for the cylinder head rebuild and milled
$75-120 for the gasket set

so roughly $500. Good time to replace the spark plugs, timing belt and the cooling system including the heater hoses in the rear of the engine bay.
Labor is about 6-12 hours depending on skill level.
Just make sure you clean everything up real well, keep track of all the nuts, bolts and connectors and take your time. You will learn a lot from this job.
