is a 1990 auto turbo I6 motor reliable
Ok here's the story. For my graduation gift my parents offer to buy me a 1990 turbo inline6 automatic with only 27757 miles on it (it was the guys second car). I have read forums were people have said the engine can give on you problem, mainly the gasket. The car is already a high price 7k car. And I've been looking for a supra forever now and finally its there. But my main concern is what I just asked because im over my limit on what i wanted to spend on a project car already
( I know its an auto I have plans on making it a mannual) Thank you for your help |

buy it, and never look back!
have a shop (or do it yourself) retourque the head bolts to 75lbs and you will have a solid car for may years to come

I havent re-torqued my head yet. Ive had my Supra about 2 months now, and I love the car. Sometimes I wish I had bought a Turbo, but others Im glad I didnt. Im too old to go racing around town in a hopped up tuner. I enjoy smooth power, comfortable ride with a hint of racing style.
I really have no idea what a shop would charge to re-torque the head bolts. Its not a particularly hard job. Its getting everything out of the way to do it is all. Tell your parents that it needs to be done, and that your research (call it that and they will be impressed) has shown that this simple preventative maintenance will greatly improve the life of the engine, and that its NOT a performance mod. It is a relatively cheap fix for a well known and documented flaw in this particular engine. Then, buy yourself a service manual, some decent hand tools, and start slowly teaching yourself how to do your own service...you will appreciate your car more in the end if you do.

If it really has 27k miles on it, As long as you take care of it, you could have it for another 15 years before something major breaks down. And even then, Its easy to fix almost anything on these cars. Supras are good cars to have to learn how to work on cars . My car has 188k miles on it, 4k and 8 months of which ive put on, And the only thing ive replaced is the thermostat and a rear tire. Pretty good for a 20 year old car so far.

Buy It
My car is a 91 turbo with 60,000 miles and it is still as reliable as when it was new. Just do the basic maintenence and it will be fine just like any other car. By the way, for the last couple of months I've been stricktly drag racing with no ill effects. buy with confidence.
