loud knocking

i dunt know what happend to me this time, god doesnt like me

i was driving home last night then all of a sudden a loud knockin sound came from the engine bay, first it started when im in 3000 rpms, then it got to 2000 then lower and lower, then my car shut down while i was in the middle of the road, almost getting me to an accident

i got it to crawl into a parking lot , it wouldnt even crank, i left it there for the night

came back this morning, i got it to crank (barely) and i limpd it home, it sounds like its the pistons, i dont know tho, it sounds like its deprived of oil, cuz its really knockin hard as hell as in when you hit metal in to a bench sander,

the starting problem i dunt get since it giving me a 12v reading

the knockin i dunt know what can b causing it

so you know i have been having problems with my tranny, my gear grinds everytime i switch to 2nd, and reverse

and when i drove it the oil pressure gauge wasnt moving at all, dunt get it since i put the oil myself, dunt make fun cuz i know how to do that pls

anybody got any ideas what could be my problem this time?

jfunez 06-26-2006 03:50 AM

dead engine....................

theWeezL 06-26-2006 07:04 AM

...I forsee....

A part out thread...

no seriously, dude that doesnt sound good at all. My guess is that you spun the main bearings, depriving the crank of oil and the knock is rods. Time to start searching Ebay for a JDM replacement.

Ahmad88 06-26-2006 02:55 PM

haha, i had the same problem 2 times in a row it is a piston, check your oil see if you have enough to lube the pistons, take apart the engine and see if anything is damaged, if somethin is then replace it asap, just yesterday i started hearing the same sound when i got home, i checked my oil, theres was barely any in there, so i changed the oil and filter, when i first start it up i would hear it but then it goes away, you could have the same problem.im scared that i damage something or loosend a piston. I have one hell of a history with my supra, first time i got it a piston was loose and shot it through the block, second engine overheated and cracked the head, 3rd engine not enough oil, i hope nothing else happens. sorry for goin off topic but good luck with your car man.

Supra2NR 06-26-2006 02:59 PM

i dont know if i should be sad or happy,

i should be sad cuz this fucked up,

one questions how many quartz of oil do you guys put in your car?

but im happy cuz, new lightweight pistons here i come, new rods come on down, maybe even a new fuel rail, while im at it a new MHG, i can get the bigger injectors while im doing this, yeah cuz the knockin was horrible

but sori guys, no part-out thread yet, but there's gonna b a revival though

Ahmad88 06-26-2006 03:31 PM

i put almost 5 quarts i have it where theres some oil left in the bottle. it says the capacity is like 4.7 quarts i think. but i want to change the pistons and hte rods but no money!

Supra2NR 06-26-2006 08:09 PM

what do you guys think of those lightweight pistons heads?

and what kind of a/m rods should i looking for

any brands? any names in particular?

i put 4 quarts of oil, do you guys think that was too short of what the car needed thats why i got this problem now?

Only if thats all you ever did. Have you heard of a dipstick? (as in..."Enus, YOU DIPSTICK! :eek3: Cud ya ya! :bouncy: )

and there is one other thing on our cars that helps determine if they have enough oil...its called an oil pressure gauge...Its just to the left of your voltmeter...its got this cool little icon on it that looks like an oil can! Ever seen it? :stickpoke

Im just razzin ya bro! but seriously, if you think you were low on oil, then my guess is...you were low on oil. Im also willing to bet that right before this happened you were going through the gears or rev'n at a stop light...come on, admit it...you over rev'd...leading to spun bearings, loss of oil pressure and a few miles later knockin rods!

either that or your vacuum cleaner turbo leaned your mixture out, heated the cylinders and caused all this mess. Either way, Im thinkin you left out some vital information about how it happened :dunno:

Ahmad88 06-27-2006 01:05 AM

well yall wont believe this but i think a piston is stuck or sumthing else that is metal. i started my car about to leave, then all of a sudden it just shutoff, thinking the battery maybe crapped out i tried to start it again, it sounds like a piston is stuck or hitting something, i had to leave it at a gas station down the street, its still there now waiting to be towed back to my house.this better not be the 4th engine that crapped out on me, i hope i just need to replace a piston and maybe a port, hope i dont have to replace the block or something major. im starting to hate my supra ever since i got it, it has been a money sucker, gas guzzler, engine crapper. What my mom and i want to do is trade in a van that we have for 2 cars, i wanna get a used civic go safe and save gas!!

LOL

NeXt !

Supra2NR 06-28-2006 03:01 PM

no revving this time, cuz i was in a good neighborhood, last time i did that there,i got a 150 dollar ticket for disturbing the peace, and that sum bull**** i ddnt think u can disturb the peace with a 2.50 muffler, the oil pressure gauge was reading like it should when i was driving, although i had a problem with the dipstick, it never gave me a good reading dunt know, it is possible sumthing is blockd in there

and to that guy ready to betray his supra wit a civic
hope you dont get into an accident with your honda

Ahmad88 06-28-2006 05:03 PM

i found out that my engine wont start because it might be my alternator, the problem is the engine isnt getting enough power to start up. man i really got scared.

Supra2NR 06-28-2006 10:01 PM

i know that the alternator isnt my problem , i already can tell its the pistons,
and damn, how can i jus push cars like this if im not careful next time im gonna pe pushing my car home.

burton51m 06-29-2006 04:42 AM

i am running Castrol full synthetic oil now. its better oil for high mileage cars. how long have you been running it with 4qts? checking the oil (for ppl that know how.. lol jk) is a must and i do it every time i fill the tank.

Ahmad88 06-29-2006 07:17 AM

but synthetic is expensive but i'll check with my bro see if its do-able

Isphius 06-29-2006 07:45 AM

Sounds like a spun bearing. And soudns like you were low on oil, Which caused one of your rod bearings to seize to the crank. And yah, A thing to remember on any car (Ahmad88), When you hear the metal on metal clunk, thats the starter gear hitting the flywheel and not having enough juice to move it. And the click is when you dont have enough voltage to even close the solenoid. Always check your power first when your car dies/wont start. Ill buy your supra if you dont want it :) haha. Dont get a civic whatever you do. At least stick with a toyota.

Ahmad88 06-29-2006 08:59 AM

thx if you really wanna buy it i live in houston,tx and wuts wrong with civics? its a good reliable car, my friend has had his civic for years and hasnt had 1 problem with it, my brother has a 2001 prelude runs like new still. one day me and my bro are gonna try some tips he found, like find the alternator and get a paperclip, clean the connectors to the battery, those circle things around the positive and negative. bunch of other stuff, hopefuly it will start up and also the oil is dripping, i think its from the filter, i think my brother didnt put it on right or tight enough it doesnt seem like its comin from the pan/bolt. i'll check it out one day.

f00g00 06-29-2006 09:07 AM

Synthetic oil does cost more but you can run it longer than regular oil. A good article is here.

Sometimes it is hard not to shake my head at these posts. I am amazed at the lack of research and time needed from the car owner to make sure they can even fill and check the oil level. I think it is the times though and not enough time spent on learning anything about cars.

These cars, MK111's, are at best 14 years old! You can't expect to get into any car that is that old and not run into problems. Just learn the basics. Oil and water levels, check the belts, check under the car for leaks and check the tires for air. I can't get my daughter to do those things with her car and it seems that most of her friends are the sameway with their cars. They want big sound, but not a reliable car to listen to the tunes in. If it breaks it is obviously a crappy car and they then want a Honda or a Chevy or some other car that never breaks, according to their friends.

They all break!

If any car stops unexpectedly, it is going to require maintenance. That doesn't make it a crappy car. Learn about the car, don't listen to a guy if he only talks about one brand being the best. The Supra is an upper end performance car, but very solid. They will leak and miss and get hot and do all those things ANY older car will do. Your car will probably be the second largest investment in your life, treat it that way. Learn about it, just the routine stuff at least, or buy a new one, but if you don't take care of it, guess what............

Sorry,..............sigh.

Russ

Isphius 06-30-2006 06:29 AM

Well said russ...... I agree totally. About the honda thing, Im just kidding for the most part. They are well made cars. The only problem i have with them is that everyone has one, Its like a sell-out car, On the buyers part, not hondas. Except, I dont get the civic SIs and the vtech integras. Its like...lets take a cheap ass platform, And make a 190hp tiny 4 cylinder for it. Its just...counter pointative(not a word). But i dont blame them because people love it. And the ricers...they need no mention. To be a little more helpful, As for your oil leak...Def get that fixed. Oil is a motors life. Its life is draining into the street! lol. And yes, Make sure things are put on right/tight and arent leaking... It will always help and its a pain when you have to do something twice. And to clean the battery terminals just get a wire brush for grills from the dollar store, they work great. And use some backing soda water to get the foamy stuff off if its there. I always see this stuff, but its never on any of my own cars. Guess im just that good. haha. If you get stuck just remember the mechanics 2% rule. You are always at least 2% smarter than what you are working on.

Supra2NR 07-01-2006 03:00 AM

who says , anything about the supra being crappy , so how many quarts am i suppose to have, the being short of oil caused this to happen?,

if it did, i smell a lawsuit

Isphius 07-01-2006 06:19 AM

5, or untill its up to the middle of the dipstick. lol.
