engine swap !
hey guys !
I posted pics and specs of my car in the show-off forum recently , I'm totally in love with supras. I've started working on the engine and whatnot , aswell as fixing the little things here and there. I've found quite a few things that need to be fixed before I can mod the engine, and so i'm considering the option of buying a new engine and tranny from japan :). My current engine has 250k on it , I know they last a long time, but a 2.5L 1jzgte engine with 45k sounds much more appealing. The supra is a targa, and an automatic. I'd like to change it to the manual because autos are ridiculous. I understand that its going to be a lot of work to do the change-over, and its a challenge i'm willing to take-on. Have any of you done this , or something like it before ? Will I have to redo my drivetrain or reinforce it because of the extra power ? If i have the manual transmission , that was paired with the engine, will I still have to buy parts to convert ? (apart from the clutch pedal and such) I'm quite excited to begin work on this , every bit of input is appreciated. |

ok, i've got a specific question.
Which engine would be a stronger base for a 400hp car to be put with manual transmission into a 1987 7mgte ? Shouldn't the 1jz be called 2jz because it has two turbos ? |

How many cylinders is the 1Jz? it seems kind of odd to me that they'd have a 6 cyl 2.5l ... hm
All supra motors are inline 6s. The displacement does vary. And if you want the faster engine, go for the 7mgte. The 1jz doesnt have as much torque as the 7m.
Faster in which way , top end or 0-60?
Nothing wrong with a 2.5 straight 6. Ive got two 2.5's connected together at the crankshaft that run independent of each other electronically. Its my wifes BMW 750IL V12. And it hauls ass. Whenever I need a speed fix I leave my Supra at home and drive her car lol.
Both. People think horsepower makes speed. Its the torque that makes a car fast. The 1jz has considerably less torque than a 7m. Which is the reason a 7m will beat a 1jz with the same horsepower.
ok , but wouldn't the 1jz be better for top end because of higher revs?
