My brake lights are stuck on. wtf!
I drove home from work, and my brake lights work fine. I know this because the bottom cover of the third brake light is missing, and previous owner chopped a whole in the bottom of the light assembly, So my third brakelight reflects off of my sun screen thing for the windshield i have back there. So i know when the brake lights are on. I pull up at home. All is normal. I went to get my lunch cooler outa the trunk, So i would have noticed a light shining in my face. I get out and go in, And i know for sure my lights were off when i went inside. About 5 mins ago, My grandma tells me the lights are on on my car. And i ask the inside lights? and she says no, the ones in the back. So im like wtf, thinking she doesnt know what shes talking about, and i go out there and my brake lights are lit up. I started the car(charge the battery up) and i played with the brake pedal. No dice. I even drove around some small local roads to see if something happened, watching the third brake light the entire time(all 5 bulbs lit up BTW). So I just pulled the tail lights fuse, and theywent out and came in to write this. Im pretty sure its not a short, because when i took the fuse out. Faulty pedal switch mayber? I really need some ideas, because i have to drive to work at 5 am, and i definatley need my brakelights to work :(. Im about to look through the online tsrm, but any help here appreciated. Thanks

yeah I would bet a bad switch...although its wierd it would go bad working, instead of not working.
|
Yes thats why i think it may be something else. Usually they do stop working at all. Im gona pull it out and clean it, if i can find it, It might just be stuck. Who knows? BTW weezl, i had a cool idea for your targa top brace...im gona post it on ure brace thread. Anyone else have some ideas on what to check out?

Great, I go out there with tools in hand and its raining. Of all the times. Its not even like little rain its moses 40 days at sea rain. Thanks earth and supra!
|
go and adjust the switch so that the pedal is always resting on it when you aren't braking :)
|
Well its dark now so id have to look tommorow. Thanks thou! where is the switch located. I hope i dont get fired for going in late :(
|
just follow the brake pedal stalk up into the dash till you find a two pin plug which is on a round shaped switch which should be directly on the pedal stalk, you'll find it ;)
|
Ok well I just checked that out, In the rain, with a flashlight and umbrella, cause i was bored, and the switch looks fine. It goes all the way in when the brake is resting. :(:( Any other ideas? or how much is the switch to replace..It might just be bad. If worst comes to worst i can put a switch on and remember to flip it for the ride. Im not at my own house right now, So i have no kinda tools except a screw driver and pliers :(. I dont even have my trust voltmeter with no more case. Its just a circuit board with a dial, LCD, and wires.

Check to see if the rubber piece on the pedal where the switch is. If theres a hole where the button on the switch is, then it fell out. Thats what happened to me. The little rubber piece fell out and I didnt realize. So i went out and bought a new switch. They are cheap from what I remember. But I dont remember the exact price. Somewhere around $15.
P.s. - Pray its not the switch. Its an absolute pain in the ass to adjust. Your ribs start hurting from laying on the door sill and you hands will start to hurt. Overall its not fun. Good luck lol. |
Hmm Ill check the rubber thing tommorow. From what i could see with my wimpy flashlight it pushed the switch pretty far when the pedal was all the way down. Im hoping its not a short somewhere in between the pedal switch and the fuse or something. I think its very odd that it just decided to turn the brake lights on when the car wasnt on or moving. Like usually when stuff brakes you have to use/touch it first lol.

Ok i fixed the brake lights, but now i have a more serious problem. When I hit my brakes, My climate control panel flickers or goes out. And going down the highway, If i put the heat to off, It Makes the red batterty light go on, The brake light go on (dimly/flickering), And the voltage go up to almost 18 or less if i let off the gas. and when i switch it between high and off it causes the car to just die altogether for 3 or 4 minutes at a time. This is not good when your in 80 mph traffic and all your lights and motor die and your in the middle lane. To say the least, Im severly pissed at my car ATM, And i dont even feel like going out to look at it. It died at least 10 times on my way home. But when not on the highway, It seems fine. Except the CC buttons still flicker when i hit the brakes, But the car doesnt die. I seriously need some help with this, I dont know much about the supra wiring or what could even cause this. Its like the heater can just...disconnect the battery cable. BTW all fuses are intact, The cables are on tight, And the battery is a 2 month old 250$ gell battery. Any help appreciated

Bad or loose ground wire somewhere? What was wrong with the taillights?
|
Possibly bad, maybe good
Well the sounds of it you have two wires touching somehwere...maybe a wire snapped out of its holder, and managed to touch another one. <---- that is highly unlikely, but still a possibility.
If it isn't that then there is always the fact that your electrical system is now dying. I hope not, because I just look at the wireing harness and don't want to touch it....I am not good with electrical stuff. (Makes me think back to when I shocked myself, and woke up on the other part of the room) |
Well i just drove an hour an a half home, And it didnt. It might have been cause the car was hot and losing a soldering connection or something. It still does the flickery thing thou.
|
definately a short somewhere, which can be a real pain to find. I would recommend pulling some access panels, maybe even the gauge cluster...then wait till its dark out (or do this in a garage where you can get it dark enough) and then try turning on the CC and/or other things while looking for a faint spark. you can wiggle some wires back there too to try to duplicate the problem or even possibly alleviate it.
The only thing that has me concerned is that if you have a short and its not blowing a fuse...then the wire thats shorted is a direct connection (meaning pre fuse block) and that can be a little scary...if you've ever seen a wire fire in a car....trust me you dont want that to happen! |
Lol, well my monte carlo, before doing a remote starter solenoid and heat shield, The header would melt the starter to the "ON" position, Even if the key was completely off and out of the car. I remember my dad telling me to stop cranking and i was holding the key out the window and he was like man that s not good. Anyways competely melted the entire wiring harness that goes to the starter/trans and the battery exploded all over and corroed my paint to hell. So Ive got a little experience with that haha. But, I think it has something to do with a short inside the control panel. Because when it flickers, I noticed in the dark, Its becasue its going to night mode and then day mode fast, Like dim/all lights on, to not dim/lcd/button lights only. And its got something to do with the brake switch. Because that is what i adjusted to fix the lights. Thansks for the replies all...wish me luck

How did you fix the tails from staying on... I have the same problem
