Newby questions...
High all. I am considering purchasing an 87 Supra non-turbo from a guy. It has a major coolant leak and he thinks it's the head gasket despite that there is no coolant mixing with the oil. I read on here that the coolant passage can simply leak into the combustion passage and just get burned away so maybe that's what is wrong. It also has a check engine light on. Not sure why, the car seems to run fine. I am a newb to Supras but not to cars nor to turbos. I am considering buying this car and replaceing the head gasket asap, and diagnosing the check engine light. Then I'm just gonna mess around with it until I have the money to do an overhaul under the hood. How much boost can I run in the stock NA motor? I plan to buy a relatively stock type supra turbo, intake manifold and full turbo exhaust. What else do I need to do it. I know the compression is higher on a non-turbo motor. What all would I need to do internally to the motor to run 15-20psi? I know it will need low compression forged pistons but what else?
Also, are there any motor rebuild walkthroughs or guides for a turbo application? Thanks for any help you can give! |

Also, how much power can the stock tranny take before I start having problems? And how do I know which one I have? It is a 5 speed.

Ide suggest the new engine. Sounds like theres a lot of problems. I am unsure about the PSI though. I know I can run 13PSI on my engine but I have upgraded rods and pistons and 550cc injectors and a larger fuel pump. Also I have the MKIV intercoole(dont think that has anything to do with it)

The w58(you have) cant take a lot, But some more than the stock 205 ish that the na makes. If you convert to turbo be sure to get an r154 and they are good for some more power.

can you fix the coolant issue and reset the ecu to see if the check light comes back on?

Well if I buy it I think I'll probably run it NA until I actually have all of the parts I would need to turbo it. Something else I didn't think about until last night was oil lines to the turbo. I don't know what all it takes to do that. I imagine I'll end up having to find a turbo Supra in a junk yard and salvaging a bunch of turbo components off of it.
As far as the check engine light. I figured on reseting the ECU and checking it but are there any common causes for check engine lights in these cars? |

Yes, having a turbo car available to you always helps. What would be better is if you can find a cheap crashed or not working turbo, And then get an n/a with a straight body, And put all the parts youll need on either car. Id say use the turbo shell.
