my 1987 non turbo problems

a mechanic told me that 87 supra engines often heat up and cause internal damage in the block..he said it was useless to try and get a new (used) engine..i have never had head gasket issues with my car before it broke down..its @ 180000 miles and i wanna replace the engine but i dunno cuz of that guy..so im just lookin for a second opinion from people around here..thank you for your guys' help, i really wanna fix 'er up but im not sure if i should invest more money or get a new car because as of now i am carless..thanks again!
