Default head machine

Everybody keeps on saying to have your head machined when changing to a metal headgasket. I bought a jdm motor, installed a 1.4 mm metal head gasket and arp studs torqued at 80ft/lbs without doing anything but cleaned the head and block really good. I run 11 lbs of boost and it runs beautiful.

sounds cool, but this may be out of the subject.

I hear a lot of guys talk about some shims somewhere on the head, the thing is when I dismantled my 7mgte head I found nothing that look like shims on the head or the camshaft.
Am I missing something ?
By the way, I'm still in the process of doing the metal headgasket...I symply ran out of funds.
so far I had the hed machined, cleaned and tested, ARP studs, some of the gaskets but still lacking the 1.4 mm Cometic metal head gasket and turbo gaskets.

The only shims I know of are used to adjust the valves, see links

How much did you skim off your head ? looking at your photo there seems to have been a lot of material removed. This is the photo of my head straight from the block.

cant remember but it was a bit, that's why the machinist recomended me to get a 1.4 or a 1.5 mm head gasket also I ot in touch with a company that sell the cometic headgasket and told them how much it had been taken off of the head and he figured the same. It could of posibly been 20 thousands or something like that..
