HG/Engine Plz help

alright, so i was pondering my swap idea.. which i still want to do, but was thinking of waiting till spring to do it.. so i was also thinking of doing my head gasket.. i was thinking of a HKS 1.2mm MHG and Arp bolts.. this will cost me about $2000 less.. and i still owe money on my car, so ill have less debt.. but then i was thinking about, what if the engine is bad? because when it started blowing white smoke, i drove it home, might have been a 5 minute drive at about 35mph or so. and its pretty much sat ever since, do you think that would have any bad effects? do you think i should bother getting a MHG and ARP bolts? or just go OEM? also.. at high RPMS it would puff a little blue smoke sometimes, do you think my rings are going? is there any way to check this before wasting my money on the head gasket? help please
