Oil Pan gasket
Is it true that you have to pull the motor to change the oil pan gasket?
mine is leaking and thats where it is coming from... took it in and they said they had to pull the motor to get to the oil pan gasket and that it would be expensive. just wanted to know if there was another way |

Yes there is an other way. break your mounts loose and jack up the front of the engine and put 2 x 4 blocks laying flat between the mounts and the frame and you should be able to pull the pan off and change the gasket. You might have to rotate the crank to get the counter weight in the right position, bbut you should be ablr to get it off. Well thats what I have to My MKII I dont think there is to much difference between the two. MY MKIII does not look different.

the crossmember goes right under the oil pan so unless you feel like tearing your suspension apart there isnt another way

Yes your right the cross member does go under the oil pan on the 7m's, but it also goes under the oil pan on the 5m's too. I still can get my pan off on my 5m. By again taking the mounts loose from the frame and jacking the engine up and putting 2 x 4 blocks under the mounts to hold the engine up. I have done this twice to change out rod bearings. yes the oil pan gets snaged that why you just have to work with it to and turn the crank by hand to get the counter weights out of the why. I can do this in about 15 min. I'm a pro at it know.!!!!!!!!!!

MAN!!! Way too many mufflers and cats on the exhaust system!!!
Dropping the crossmember is the easier way to go though. I would do it that way. If you do pull the engine, you might as well replace all the seals and gaskets, which in the long run would be best, but for the pan, pull the crossmember. Russ |

I dont think its possible to remove the cross member, aparently you'll have to remove the lower control arms.
