Default Charcoal Canister????

Me and my brother are rebuilding our 87 supra. We both have no clue on what exactly the charcoal canister does for the vehicle. Can someone please explain it for us, and let me know if there is a way to eliminate it for possibly more power. Plus, is blocking off the EGR valve a good idea to?? If so, wont it kick a check engine light on?? Please, all the help is deeply appreciated. thanks guys.
And god bless supra's!!!

site for charcoal canister, thanks to mr.nickleye
http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/evaporat.htm

the egr recirculates exhaust gases to help with emissions. the jdm engines came with block off so it wont hurt the engine, atleast to my knowledge

either leave it on, or block it off. just dont leave it open, it will be like an exhaust leak and may cause more problems.

What if you just put the small vacuum line that come off the canister and goes on the coolant thing straight on one of the intake vacuum ports, would that mess anything up????

its been proven that egr doesnt effect performance at all whether you have it on or not. its just an eco-friendly device

These posts are getting confusing and messed up. Some of you are talking canister, and some egr.

All the info for both seperate items are on this forum. Check the FAQs section, and also do a search for related threads.

Also...don't just hook vacuum up to the canister, as it will perge the can all the time.

EGR can be blocked off without 'harming' the engine.

EGR.....so many discussions on this, as well as other forums. If you have EGR, I suggest keeping it. But if you must remove it and block it....you will need:

1. JDM ECU, USDM ECU is calibrated for use with EGR, ECU will will not function properly without it.

2. Another option, get a stand alone or a piggy back to disable the EGR function of the ECU.

There is a lot of arguments in regards to EGR, it's your car....only you can make that final wise decision.

As for the canister, you can get a smaller type canister from newer cars or get the JDM one which is a lot smaller than the big ones we have.
