Default Shifting in a automatic?

I always here some of my friends say they manually shift gear in their automaic transmission cars. I've heard this shouldent be done since it can mess-up your tranny.

Is this true?

i think its called a tiptronic and you can have your car in drive like an auto but if you want to controll it you put the shifter in a certain spot and there is + and - and you just move it up or down to change gears.
