Check the hoses ans piping behind the head. The piping is universal and has outlets on both sides so it can go into a lhd or rhd car without having to change to another pipe setup. One side has the heater hose and the other has a plug. A small pinhole leak could drip on the starter area and trickle down the transmission and you might not ever see it till it finally blows. If you look over the whole area and see no discoloration from fluids then its probably OK. You can also squeeze the hose when its cold and see if you can get anything to leak there too.

Cool

i replaced a small plastic ring that goes on the bottom of the shifter

" replaced "
isn't the right word because when i got the shifter out i found that the plastic ring that is supposed to be there wasn't there . i had the play for years and never got around to it
it's not that difficult just a few bolts
