Coolant Leak
Ok so i have a coolant leak on my 88 supra. It is dripping down the transmission from the back of the engine i guess. the other day it was sputtering coolant up behind the head. i checked the hose that goes to the heater and the hose that goes from the head to the block and they seem fine.

anybody have an idea?

If it were mine.....
I would try to clean the area as best I could, to help see. Then...... I would use a mirror and strong flashlight to see if its leaking at that fitting, or the hoses at the clamps, etc. I suppose you'd need to get it hot to build up some coolant pressure, if you don't have a (access to a) pressure tester. |
you will probably find cracks on the hose that is connected directly behind the head but you won't be able to see them without the mirror like mrnickleye suggests
i'd plan on replacing it i don't know if your is a turbo but on the exhaust side of the block there is a rubber cap that could be leaking , it's located just below and just behind the turbo . it's near the tranny but i don't think it would leak onto the tranny . just another thing to check . i'd say it's a cracked hose up top and behind |
Yup, that cap leaked on mine. And those behind the head hoses leak all the time and are rather hard to get off. I just cut mine and then pried the clamp off the top of the fitting instead of the old fashion way of unscrewing it lol. But i wouldnt suggest doing that cause you can break the fitting off that way.

I think I got the answer....if its not that hose on the outlet...its the egr cooler cover gasket...that square cover on the back of the head...
If its a JDM engine without an egr. then there will be no cover but instead a coolant plug...check with a mirror and a light just as mr nickel eye sugests... |
that square egr cover on the back of the head is not a coolant passage, no coolant should be in it at any time. it is a crossover port for the egr valve to send exhaust gas from one side of the head to the other.
