ive been wondering the same thing
i also have yet to blow mine. my 87 n/a has 115k on it, and ive had it since it had 108k. i too wonder if a previous owner changed the headgasket. sometime soon im gonna check the hg, and maybe put in a new one with arp studs. ive never reved mine past 6000rpm, and i usually shift into 2nd gear at 3.5, 3rd at 4, 4th and 5th around 4.5 (normal driving). sometimes ill shift around 6 though (rarely).
i hardly ever race (once in a blue moon), and i dont care for 1/4 mile times. i prefer long fast drives. i wonder if people who blow their n/a supra hg's blow them due to driving like theyre turbocharged. |

I've had two MKIII's, my 86.5 for 6 years putting on 35K miles and no probs whatsoever and my 87 has 67K miles, had it for 1-1/2 years and no probs. I thinks its about two issues: 1) maintenance (coolant system related of course, besides everything else we should do) and, 2) how you drive your car (racing it, driving it in HOT climates). There are many other cars that blow their head gaskets, not just the Supra.
So, most importantly, KEEP AN EYE ON THAT TEMPERATURE GUAGE.

Good thread, i have had my turbo 7M for 6 months, and have modded it a fair bit - i am almost waiting for the HG to go, but so far so good!
The car has 260,000 kms so is well run in - but drives mint. I only drive it on weekends and i give it a damn good thrash every now and then but not constantly. I am wondering if the HG has already been taken care of by previous owner... to hard to tell. I guess its a matter of 'if it aint broke dont fix it' haha! |
