maneul conversion ?s
i am planing to do a transmission swap when i geto ut of school for christams holidays me and my brother are going to put a 5 spd in my 88 supra my question is can i do the swap without pulling out the engine i no it will be hard ot get the bell housing bolts out if u dont pull the eninge but if i didnt have ot pull the enigne it would be a lot faster and easyer and if anybody has donbe this bwefore i was wonder about how hard is it to do and about how many days it takes to do it thanks

Yes, you can leave the motor in. Unbolt the trans crossmember and lower it on a jack until you can get at the bellhousing bolts up top. Don't forget the starter.
It can be done in a day if you know what you're doing, take your time. Make sure you have all the parts before you start. Also a good time to replace the rear main seal. |
ok thanx i still dont really understand tho it is really hard ot reach the top bolts on the bell housing i no to take aout the crossmeber and the drive shaft but how will that help me get the bell housing lose also how hard is it to but i nthe cluch pedal switch the brake peadl and but in the cluctch masdter cyclinder i heard those are some of the hardest thing to do i would apprecitate the help sincei am only 16 and am wokring on my supra project

it there any way to tell if u have a R154 or W58 5 speed tranny
i just ahve a 5 speed an heard these r the only 2 u can do the swap with how do i find out which one i have |
any one no anything
|
Dont no unless your planning on running like 400 somthing horspower the only thing that really matters is if you have a good clutch for the trans cause the w58 or what ever it is will work with the car but you need to have a nice clutch for it to hold the horsepower from the turbo

the brake pedal takes 10 mins putting the clucth pedal and master is a snap but make sure you have the clucth lines set up before you set up your master. i wasnt able to finish my swap but putting the pedals in were deffinatly the easiest part. (dont know how to wire them up) to figure out what trans you have look on top of the gear box and there are thoose grove things. mcompare them with this photo. this is a r-154 and it came out of a turbo supra.
|
if you want over 350 hp you want to get a r-154 (turbo) trans because it can hold like over 1000hp but if you dont want to go over 350 you can use the w58 (n/a) trans. the one in the pictures above is a r-154(turbo). Questions??

for the brake pedal there is a 14mm nut and bolt. i found it was easier to take the black box off that is right above the steering coloum (a 10 or 12mm bolt dont forget how this goes on.) once that is off you be able to use a rachet, extender, and 14mm socket. fit that on one bolt and then use a 14mm wrench. it might be a bit of a nuckle buster.
for the clucth pedal you need the bracket as well. if you look under the hood in the driver side corner you will see 3 holes 2 small ones for bolts and one larger one. when you have all the clucth lines set up you will be able to put in the master cylinder. you put it in place and then go under the dash and put up the clucth pedal bracket and put on the nuts and bolts and your done. |
also there is a little silver box next to where the brake pedal goes that says 7mge it is right i nthe way of where i need ot put the clutch any idea what this is and if ican move it to put my clutch pedal in ( my car has a sunroof and for some reason i think it might have ot do with trhe sun roof)

im not sure what that would be. there are like rubber plugs for those holes.

88 supra auto to 5 speed swap.
hi. my name is kenny i am jeffs older brother . i have changed the slave cylinder on a stand. supra befor and know exctaly what you went threw in in your pictures. i only have one question the auto wont start unless its in Drive or nuetral. and the manual has that little switch the petal pushes in when the push the pedal to the floor. i know a way to jump it and make it work i was just woundering what you did on you car.
thanks for all your info its been a big help. |
i was wondering the same thing on how to get the car to start after switching it from auto to manual. what do you have to do?
|
i didnt get a chance to finish mine but i dont think you nedd to wire up the pedal to get the car to start. you just wont be able to use cruise and you have to rember to push the pedal in when starting your car. you will have wire up the trans though so the tail lights will work and all that stuff.
|
ok do u no of any way to hook up the pedal becasue u use my cruise a lot and will need it by the way y didnt u finish yours?
|
never did the pedal but i think there is a write up on supra forums http://supraforums.com/forum/index.php
i didnt really know what i was doin and got stuck on trying to get the starter off and then decided to wait till i get my engine as well so i can do it all at once. |
i pulled my auto trans today it took me the most time to get the starter out like 45min buy i got the transmission out it took 2hrs and 10min pretty goodi think but my 5spd is going in tommorow
|
tight post some pics
|
ok so i git my transmission i yesterday it works good but no pics sorry my lcutch squeaks when u push it in and let it out and the pedal fells really soft sometimes it fells like the cltuch isnot disengaing all the way my dad says it is prob the slave cylinder that it is leaking
|
that or you didnt put the realse hub on right
|
what is the relesase hub
|
the part that slidesonto the tranny and hold the clucth in place(inside the bell housing)
the part that the fork connects to. try every thing else before you have to take out the tranny cause that would be a bitch or look through the inspection holes in the bell housing. http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...re=3101&Page=2 |
y could it be squeakin my bro spay some spray oil in on the clutch pressure plate and it quit for like 5min then it started again
