heater problem..... cold like heck...

i got an '89 mkiii.
the other day i going to replace my valve gasket and other parts...

i try to testing the a/c and the heater and see if it work... if it doesnt work then i was thinking about take the a/c out and dont use it.

when i turn on the a/c the a/c work and its cold and i dont have problem with it... it woks like nornal car to me...

now here is my problem...
now i try to turn on the heater... i dont feel any air coming out of the vent.. well... i can feel little only when i put my hand close to the vent... the heat is going on for maybe at least two or three minutes and i still dont have any heat aka hot air coming too... and while i changing my cd (radio was on). i look my head up out side.. i see whole bunch of smoke coming from the hood... i check it.. i didnt find anything... the smoke is coming from behind the back of the engine... where the heater cored hosing is at... i dont see anything like antifreeze leak or water leak... but smoke is coming out somewhere right there.... while i put my hand on those smoke and smelling the moister that i got on my hand... i smelling something like antifreeze and oil... some thing like that....

so i not sure is it my heater cored is bad and clocking and i dont have any free flow or is it my blower... but i'm sure its not gonna be the blower... cause i got air when i turn on the a/c tho...

any suggestion will be great....

the heater core is inside, behind the glove box. so if it were to leak, you would have coolant on the passenger floor. you must have a leak at engine or hose under the hood to get the smoke.

the air should come out each area you place it in. ie: defrost, floor, vents. hot or cold won't matter. the temp is controlled by the temp up/down control.

it sends none, or more & more air thru the heater core as the temp setting is raised.

if air comes out good in high fan when temp is on cold (like 65*), but not when setting is on 85*, then there is some thing blocking the air flow thru the heater core. dirt/lint?

yes i do know that the heater core is under the passenger side floor and underneath or on the back of the glove department...

i turn it to max heat and max blow... and mid heat and max blow and mid heat and mid dlow... it still the same... i dont gain any heat...
like you said... i sure gain more hot air when i turn to 85* and doesnt matter high or low air... i still dont gain anything...

to me i think i either have a bad heater core hose or either mly heater core...
but i'm not sure...

hey uh... what about if my water hose is bad... example one of the hose is blocking or if there is something inside the hose and it clock aka stuck inside the holes for stoping the water coming from the head of the engine to the heater core..

can that be a problem too...

The hoses won't be plugged, but the valve on the firewall may not be opening all the way. Pull the vacuum hose off the little solenoid and put it directly on the water control valve.

This will give you full valve opening.

make sure there is vacuum at that little vacuum hose. when I got my car it was not hooked up on the other end to the intake manifold, so the heater core was not getting water.

huh? i wonder which vacuum hose and wich solenoid... and where is it located at...

i didnt remember seen a solenoid and a little vacuum hose on the heater core... you got picture of that...

if you do that will be great...

the valve on the firewall (under the hood, passenger side, heater hose from engine goes in one end, and other goes into car to heater core) may not be opening all the way.

Just read and do A. & B. Don't bother with doing C.

You do NOT need to replace a bad solenoid, just by-pass it and plug the vacuum line directly into the water valve.

The system 'normally' keeps the valve open (water flowing), all the time, except when the temp is set to 65*.
