Hi All

I am currently looking to sort out a recently bought 1991 Supra Turbo Auto. The car is in perfect condition... all accept the following prob(s):

1. There is a slight tapping noise at idle - is this normal?
2. On acceleration there seems to be a rattle at 3000 rpm - 3500 rpm from the rear left side of the engine (lower), after this point it goes - a very loose rattle at that (mechanical)
3. On starting the ignition just clicks and after several attempt will fire up no problem... could this be a poor terminal connecting.

Hope someone has some suggestions to these probs, and look forward to being a member of this forum (a new supra owner).

Cheers

probably fuel injectors your hearing as far as tapping goes at idle.

rattle could be exhaust related, heat shield or something, check there if thats what it indeed sounds like.

as far as the problem with starting i would change the terminals first, and then if that doesn't work i would start looking towards the direction of the starter.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.....

I started to tackle the ignition prob the wrong way round - took the starter off, striped it and put it back together after finding no apparent problems.

Will be replacing the terminals anyway with gold plated ones, and will clean the earthing point on the negative and put back together, i am hoping this is solve this issue.

As far as the rattle goes, i was wrong about the rev range, it is more like 1800rpm - 2500rpm. It sounds a heavier, more mechanical rattle than an exhaust related issue. - Kind of like a diesel engine on startup (old type diesel). I am hoping this is not a bigend!

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF A BIG END GOING, WOULDN'T THE RATTLE BE THROUGHOUT THE REV RANGE UNDER LOAD?

Thanks For Your Time :)

Could this simply be the oil is crap and i should flush and replace with a better oil (i currently do not know what is in there)..... any suggestions on what to put in there (car has 96,000 mile on the clock).

1.&2.the tapping noise may possibly be the lifters inside the engine. as you rev it, more oil pressure may quiet them-which is not good. they should be quiet all the time.

Hi

so would a good flush and addition of a good grade of oil be a good idea?

If so what oil, and should i add molyslip or slick 50 with this?

Kind Regards

Rosco

i'd stay away from the flush and run sae 40 or sae 50. if it quiets the noise, you've got bad lifters. if it doesnt, you may have a con rod bearing about to go..

Hi

Why would you not flush the engine first? Also which grade of sae 40/50? 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W?

The only reason i will think about using flush is if there is a blockage causing oil starvation somewhere, the flush will aid in clearing this.

the gunk may also be holding other parts together. when you flush the system it thins out all of the parts. out of personal experience i havent found a flush to be good to an engine that you've described. if it were under normal routine oil changes or basic maintenance, okay.

Hi

Thanks for all your help, will let you know what the outcome is tonight when i get a mechanic come and have a listen... all my fingers are crossed that it will be an oil pump or loose bolt-on part! :)

Kindest Regards

Rosco
