I just bought a 87 non turbo..it needs engine work. I am starting with trying to change the plugs and wires...I have NEVER done this before. From what I can see some of the plugs are easy to get to but the rest I need to remove a bunch of stuff to get to. Does anyone have a step by step with some pics that I can use....oh yeah when I drove the car home during decelleration for a high speed the car shuts off did this every time...any suggestions...thanks all

Get a manual for the car, and yes the TSRM here is also great. But get the manual and if need be, take pictures of what you are going to work on so you can compare when you put it back together. Also, number the wires or color code them. Always blow out the spark plug holes before you remove them. There is usually some oil, water, dirt or all three that can fall into the hole when you pull the plugs and that might cause the valve to stay open in that cylinder.
Take your time and ask a friend that has some car experience to help. It doesn't have to be Supra experience, but just remember that you are working mostly with aluminum and it is soft, so you can't tighten the hell out of the bolts. The spark plugs can be cross threaded so if they don't go in easy, clean the threads, and ALWAYS use anti seize on the threads! Good luck and keep us informed Russ Oh yeah and the part about the car dieing has me stumped too. I have replaced the afm to the larger one, the fuel filter, o2 sensor, better exhaust and I still get the same problem. My daughters car is an N/A and pretty much stock and hers does it too. I am wondering if it might be a problem with the fuel pump as they are still both the originals pumps on both cars. I hope someone has an answer to that one. I managed to replace the plugs and wires and put everything back together, now I want to replace the timing belt, how difficult is it to do this on a scale from 1-10 keeping in mind i have never done this before?

I would put it at about a 8. Taking everything apart isnt bad, but if you dont line the gears up perfect your timing maybe off by a little bit and may bend your valves. If you do do it, just take you time and make sure everything is perfect before you put it all back together.

I guess it is a pretty big job, I was wondering....I called the local dealer and got a quote for 344.00 Canadian sine I am in Ontario, am I better off getting them to do the repair?
