Mine (86.5) and my brother's (88) do the same thing, I found that if i just put it in fourth, let the clutch out a little bit (make the rpm drop a little), push the clutch back in, and then it goes into reverse no problem , no grinding. It's become a habit to me, i even do it on other cars now. I hope im not causing extra wear and tear on the pressure plate by doing that, but it does work and its easy enough to become a habit.

am I missing something here???? As far as I know, every car or truck that I have driven in the past 25 years, including brand new cars while I worked at car dealerships, there is not one car with manual transmission that will not grind at times when you put it into reverse. It's as common as the turn indicator on a car not turning itself off while making a lane change on the freeway. There is no solution, just accept it, put the car in any forward gear, pull the clutch out enough to move the car forward an inch then go back into reverse.

The reason you grind gears in reverse is because the tranny is still spinning. come to a complete stop, Push in clutch, place in 1-5(to stop movement), then into reverse. If it still grinds then your pilot bearing is sticking or the clutch isn't fully releasing the clutch plate for whatever reason. Reverse is unsynchronized because the gear it's self doesn't move unless engaged. So if your having trouble pushing it in and it's not grinding then usually a little roll forward or just letting the clutch out and depressing it again will get the gear teeth to line up. Reverse doesn't have a helical cut, it's square and it isn't constantly meshed like your other gears are.

Ive just made a habbit of shifting into first and then into reverse everytime, and make sure youre at a complete stop. If you still have grinds then bleed your clutch line and adjust your engagement height.
When you go to put it in reverse and it doesnt go, its just because the teeth on the gear arent lined up and they wont mesh, they have a cone shape to them from the factory which helps it mesh but the more you grind the more those round off. If it doesnt go in when i push at reverse i just slowwwly let the clutch out as if im ready to drive in reverse and it slips in right as the clutch begins to engage and then youre on your way. |
