only grind when shifting to reverse
well as short as possible once in awhile when i put my car in reverser(manual) it grinds loud and nasty...and i do have trouble to put the car into n e gear sometimes i have to force it into gear...even wen the clutch is all the way down...ty
when i run into this
i release and press the clutch one more time instead of forcing it it happens the same in all 3 supras i've had and 2 toyota trucks |
thanx buh i dont force it in though. it goes in without a problem buh it just grinds..buh ima try that...n e thign will work
Yeah I have this problem too, I'll have to give that tip a shot.
mine does the samething the sycronizer (how ever you spell that) is out i find after the car has been running for a while it shifts into reverse without grinding just put it in reverse when you park it and you should have the problem or do as someone said above "double clutch it" and it might work too
Mine only grinds if i am rolling and i try to put it into reverse. It won't shift into reverse sometimes so i just roll a bit and then it goes in.
I don't believe there is a syncro for reverse. So...you should always put the clutch in and wait a few seconds before attempting reverse gear.
Does it go right into first gear?? Sometimes, when they wear down, or other problems arise, the clutch disc may stick a little to the flywheel, or pressure plate. That will also cause the problem you describe. Also, perhaps the clutch is not fully dis-engaging when you press the pedal all the way in. |
There is no synchro for reverse. So it's normal. Unless it takes a little more than just "some" forcing. Then there may be a bigger problem.
sometimes i have to almost man handle it into first gear buh sometimes it slides right in...buh for reverse i have to put it into every gear then itll go into reverse
sometimes mine wont go into reverse no matter how hard i push on the stick. i have to do one of two things, 1.let the clutch out a little bit while applying a little pressure to the stick and it slides right in or 2. take foot off the brake and let the car roll forward or backwards a couple inches and itll go in.
mine grinds into reverse all the time and i got a stage 3 6 puck clutch, i havent found a good way of doing it i just be patient and it will eventually make it into gear
Mine (86.5) and my brother's (88) do the same thing, I found that if i just put it in fourth, let the clutch out a little bit (make the rpm drop a little), push the clutch back in, and then it goes into reverse no problem , no grinding. It's become a habit to me, i even do it on other cars now. I hope im not causing extra wear and tear on the pressure plate by doing that, but it does work and its easy enough to become a habit.

am I missing something here???? As far as I know, every car or truck that I have driven in the past 25 years, including brand new cars while I worked at car dealerships, there is not one car with manual transmission that will not grind at times when you put it into reverse. It's as common as the turn indicator on a car not turning itself off while making a lane change on the freeway. There is no solution, just accept it, put the car in any forward gear, pull the clutch out enough to move the car forward an inch then go back into reverse.
The reason you grind gears in reverse is because the tranny is still spinning. come to a complete stop, Push in clutch, place in 1-5(to stop movement), then into reverse. If it still grinds then your pilot bearing is sticking or the clutch isn't fully releasing the clutch plate for whatever reason. Reverse is unsynchronized because the gear it's self doesn't move unless engaged. So if your having trouble pushing it in and it's not grinding then usually a little roll forward or just letting the clutch out and depressing it again will get the gear teeth to line up. Reverse doesn't have a helical cut, it's square and it isn't constantly meshed like your other gears are.
Ive just made a habbit of shifting into first and then into reverse everytime, and make sure youre at a complete stop. If you still have grinds then bleed your clutch line and adjust your engagement height.
When you go to put it in reverse and it doesnt go, its just because the teeth on the gear arent lined up and they wont mesh, they have a cone shape to them from the factory which helps it mesh but the more you grind the more those round off. If it doesnt go in when i push at reverse i just slowwwly let the clutch out as if im ready to drive in reverse and it slips in right as the clutch begins to engage and then youre on your way. |
Go 2nd then reverse.
