Need suggestions
The car is a 88 N/A auto. The porblem is when the car is running, when exiting vehicle you get a nice static discharge. I have replaced plug wires, battery grounds added engine ground wires. Nothing is alleviating this issue. What else am I missing that may cause this? Obviously it is a ground issue. I just havent figured out the proper ground problem.
Just to clarify, this isnt a full on ignition wire shock. I get one fair discharge and no more until I touch metal again a few minutes later. If the car isnt running or is never started you dont get shocked. If standing outside the car, it needs to be running for a few minutes before you will get the discharge. |
I have a similar problem but I allways attributed it to the velvety seat covers
which will produce static electricity if wearing polyester or nylon clothes, I also have a sunroof and the headliner is some sort of material that also makes my hair stand up if my seat is adjusted too high. I would bet the Supra owners with leather don't have this problem. |
i have only had leather interior supras and have never gotten shocked. i really don't know what to tell you on how to fix it sorry.

not something you can really "fix"
static electricity will always be there. when you get out, you have two choices: 1) hold the frame as you get out of the car, that will ground you to the frame thus preventing a static discharge. 2) get out of the car with your key in your hand, and then touch the key on the door frame before you close the door. |
It is more than just a static discharge. Dont even have to be in the car to get shocked. Just walk up to it after it has run for more than 5 minutes. The whole thing it has to be running for it to happen. If/when I get to the bottom of this I will report back what I finaly discovered.

same thing is happening to mine, not only is it weird and annoying... but it almost broke skin once. It's quite a large electircal discharge. im very interested in seeing what you come up with... cause i was ready to start replacing the things you had mentioned and it didnt help it appears.. so i wont. and if i figure it out i'll let everyone know, so if you stay in the car after you shut it off, and maybe have a friend come up and touch the car, see if he gets shocked, if not then it is carried through you.

Stephen King comes to mind.
