insurance differences on turbo
Hi I'm new to the forums and I'm sorry that my first question is dumb one but I'm getting my first car of my own soon. I have about $6000 I've saved over the last year or so from working. I've seen 2 really good ads so far on supras. One of them on a non-turbo and one on a turbo. The turbo isn't much more, has less miles, comes in red, and a leather interior. Also it's faster. So I'm leaning towards that. My main concern is insurance though. I know insurance varies from place to place but are the turbos much more to insure than the non-turbos? It's only a 30 hp difference on them but I know insurance companies also have no reasoning. My parents are going to help me out with insurance cause they're awesome but anything over $1,300 (what my sister's was) a year I have to pay for but from my understanding insurance is high in our area. Thanks for the help.

While I'm at it this is the turbo I'm looking at.
http://cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp...eadExists=true I know it needs a few things replaced as mentioned in the ad but other than that does it look good? Also I know before 89 the Supras instead of having the usual Toyota symbol in the front, had their own unique logo. Does anyone know where I can get one? |

Yeah insurance is a bitch on these cars or for me atleast. they wanted to charge me 700 for six months for minimum coverage. Keep in mind I'm 19 but I have a clean driving record. I had to put the car in my parents name so insurance would go down to like 200 for six months. I know this didnt answer you question on the difference between the too but I'm just letting you know how much insurance was going to cost me.

The main factor in determining your insurance premium is your age, followed by your driving record. You can have a spotless driving record but if you are a male under the age of 25, you are considered high risk by insurance companys and will be charged accordingly.
I have an 87 turbo, I'm 23 and the car is owned, registered and insured in my name. I'm paying $650 every 6 months for just liability coverage. Edit: Just my opinion, but that car is not worth $5K. And contrary to what the ad says, its not "all there", its missing the coil pack cover that says "twin cam 24v turbo" and thats just what I can see from the pic. Plus it needs an O2 sensor (about $100+ from the dealer) PS hose (about $60 from dealer) and "exhaust pipe" that could mean anything from the downpipe to the cat to the cat back. Exhaust systems are not cheap for these cars. The only thing good about it is the miles, but mileage really doesn't mean crap. Just to put it in perspective, I paid $2500 for my turbo 5spd with 120K that needed work. Don't forget that every single MK3 supra will have their head gasket fail, its not IF its WHEN. I'd only pay 5 grand for a MK3 supra if it was pristine and had the head gasket done with reciepts. Last edited by IHateHacks; 03-19-2007 at 03:06 PM. |

I payed $3800. I dont think thats a bad price, Do you? Also the head Gasket was replaced recently. And as for the exhuast there is a hole in the pipe right before the muffler, but hey its going to be replaced with aftermarket soon so it dosent matter.
