Default where do i begin with this abandoned supra?

so little intro, I've never swapped an engine or transmissions. I helped a friend replace his supra's blown head gasket (seems its like a necessity on old supras i see it) I've rebuilt chevy engines (a v6 and a v8) and own a rare 84 trans am (5.0) that needs suspension work and has some rust yada yada, I've gotten into drifting in the past couple years after seeing some stuff on a mag dvd and have never really had a car that did me justice for it.
anyway back to the supra

So I've got this abandoned supra thats an 88, 7mge motor by the looks of it on the vin and part numbers and has over 170k on it. The transmission is an automatic and doesnt get out of first and is pretty much shot. Engine runs but obviously has problems and a few missing hoses. Its pretty evident that someone said a few choice words and dumped the car since its been in this parking lot for over a year.

The body is in perfect shape and this car must not have been a chicago car all its life to have almost no rust on it at all. brakes look all right, suspension looks fine and springs seem to have been replaced at some point. Frame looks good as well.

NOW, what to do? I have about a grand for funds at the moment so that would get me either a new engine or part of a transmission swap i believe.

For an engine I would go with the 7mgte and a manual trans by what I've researched so far. I have very little knowledge on this and have no idea how much they would cost or to have them professionally installed in case i screw up.

So thats my situation, any advice?

i agree if you cant swap this engine or tranny it is a wast of your money and time when i got my first supra i thought i would have someone fix it and no1 would touch it (blown head gasket) finally i started on my own and it was a learning experiance. it took me 2 times to get it right b/c vacuum lines were misplaced but i tore it down and fixed it w/ me, a friend and a Vehical mat manual

Default a pain

if you do this job then keep in mine this is no V8 you need to document everything put every nut and bolt in a bag and label it alsotake pictures of vacuum and mark w/ diff colors of paint where they go. b/c it is really easy to forget where one goes. and i have yet to see a diagram that is easy to read compaired to the location's of the lines.also remember where lines where ran. (like the vacuum hose ran up through the intake manifold from the bottom b/c if that line isn't up there you have to pull the manifold back apart to get it where you need.. Unless there is another way i dont know about) good luck if you get lost just ask

Ya I bought my 91 and it went through a qt of oil every time I started it. SERIOUSLY.

I have a few guys that I use to do work to our rides that I can't do and I showed up with my new gem and they proceded to tell me how screwed I really was.

I had them give it a tune up, airfilter and all and an oil change. They told me to take it back to the lot I got it from. They told me not to bother calling them on this auto they didn't want to mess with it.

SO I have done this myself. You find out who your friends really are when you need someone to get along side you and get dirty.

My bro helped me tear it down when it blew the first of last summer and then bounced and I let it lay for a good 5 months.

Now it's about to get really exciting. I'm going to drive this thing to those same mechanics and get them to do the brakes, springs and shocks. I'll probably have them install the rear strut bar as well.

Another mk3 has surfaced in chicago lol
Wussap bro, where in chicago are you located?

I would suggest changing ur trans first
But u would need another ecu, and master and slave cylinder and a pedal for ur swap

I can try looking around for a trans for you if u want me to,
Jus pm me if u have any question
