cold starting problems
Hey guys, first post here, i just purchased a 87 turbo supra.
the car runs better than my 2001 honda prelude SH did. Im having a problem w/ starting. i'll have the engine turning over for ~5-8 seconds before it starts up. ive looked through this site and have to say, wow, extreamly informational. however i wasnt able to find a solution to my problems. nothing seems to fit. i ruled out spark plugs and injectors because my car idles and runs like a dream. i concluded if it were either of those two, then i'd feel the engine vibrate a little from misfires. the other thing is, after having a hard time getting the car started, and when it warms up, i can shut off the car, wait 10-30 minutes, then start the car back up, and it starts on the very first click. i consider myself mechanically inclined but when it comes to older cars and starting, im totaly clueless. Im asking here to see what i should be looking into, starting with the most likely solution to the least likely. thanks in advance! |

The csi time switch is likely your problem.Try replacing it and see if that helps.

Don't just throw parts ($$$) at it
Look in the FAQs section. see: "Cold Starting System Testing"
But of course, if '89killer' wants to GIVE you the switch, to TRY and fix it, well I suppose that MIGHT work.

i am having the same exact problem. i cant figure it out either. it seems like its loosing feul pressure after sitting for a few hours and its just cranking a little longer until it builds up the pressure and fires. cause once its running it runs great. i dont know anything about the CSI. if someone could tell me where it is so that i could see if its clogged at all that would help alot. thanks

you might want to investigate the "cold start" injector . when i pulled mine it was coated in black gunk. i replaced it and a few other things with a little but not total success and finally went on to real issues instead

It is summer, and from what i understand, depending on where your at your engine needs to be pretty cold for it to use the CSI...
" If the temp outside is more than about 65* (maybe 55*) it won't allow the injector to come on, to prevent flooding. Also, even in a snow storm, after 12 seconds of cranking time, the switch will stop supplying current to the injector. (prevent flooding)" (taken from the cold start injecotor post in FAQ section) I thought this was my problem as well turned out to be timing and my throttle posistioning sensor.\ Run a diagnostic i you havent
